Luzerne County election director won’t participate in voting machine selection

<p>HANOVER TWP. &#8212; A man on parole after being released from state prison on a firearm conviction was one of two people arrested on drug trafficking charges on Tuesday.</p><p>Township police and the Luzerne County Drug Task Force arrested Maurice Barnes, 26, and Shaniece Boyd, 20, when a search warrant was executed at a residence on Wyoming Street.</p><p>Authorities allege they recovered crack cocaine, marijuana, paraphernalia and a digital scale used in the sale of illegal narcotics.</p><p>Barnes was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance and one count each of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and possession of a small amount of marijuana.</p><p>Boyd was charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a small amount of marijuana.</p><p>Barnes and Boyd were arraigned by District Judge Joseph Halesey in Hanover Township and jailed at the county correctional facility for lack of $100,000 and $75,000 bail each, respectively.</p><p>Pennsylvania State Parole issued a probation detainer on Barnes.</p><p>Court records say Barnes was on parole having been sentenced Dec. 18, 2017, to two-to-four years in state prison after he pleaded guilty to firearms not to be carried without a license, which was filed by Wilkes-Barre police for an incident on Aug. 22, 2016.</p><p>Barnes, then 19, was also sentenced April 10, 2012, to seven-to-23 months in the county correctional facility after he pleaded guilty to a burglary charge after he and a juvenile were found hiding behind a shed on Diebel Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, on Sept. 9, 2011. Police said Barnes and the juvenile had gloves and knives, and tried to hide a bag containing money, computers and other items, court records say.</p><p>At the time in September 2011, police alleged in court records Barnes and the juvenile looted houses that were vacant due to a flood evacuation.</p><style>
