<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Andrew Mamary will certainly be remembered by Wyoming Valley residents for the funeral home that bears his family&#8217;s name, but his contributions to the business community were diverse and ran deep.</p><p>Mamary died Monday in Sarasota, Fla. He was 90.</p><p>A licensed funeral director since 1951, Mamary was a graduate of Eckels College of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia. In 1952, he established a funeral home at 840 South Main St., his family said.</p><p>In 1958, he purchased property from Glen Alden Coal Company, and two years later established the funeral home that now stands at 59 Parrish St.</p><p>Mamary partnered with Gerald A. Durkin following the 1972 Agnes flood, said son Drew Mamary, who joined the business in 1977. The partnership lasted until Durkin&#8217;s death in 1984, but the company is still known as Mamary-Durkin Funeral Service, Inc.</p><p>However, Mamary also owned and operated A &amp; M Supply Company, selling office, restaurant &amp; institutional furniture, and from 1969 to 2000 partnered with William Obeid in Abe&#8217;s Hot Dogs on Wyoming Avenue in Kingston. He also was the past president of Digital Technology Computers, Ltd.</p><p>Mamary &#8220;was extremely involved&#8221; with the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce,&#8221; his son said, having been a past member board of directors, chairman of membership committee, visitation committee, secretary for two years and serving on various other committees.</p><p>He also served on the Commission for Economic Growth, the Wilkes-Barre Recreation Board, the Luzerne County Funeral Directors Association and Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association, and served as county deputy coroner.</p><p>He was appointed to the Pennsylvania State Board of Funeral Directors by Gov. Tom Ridge in 1998 and elected chairman in 2003.</p><p>He also served on the boards of numerous religious, civic and veterans groups.</p><p>Mamary also had a great passion for sports and outdoor activities, founded the Wilkes-Barre Girls Softball League, which his family continues to support. He also was an avid fisherman and was fond of his involvement with the Sarasota Power and Sail Squadron, family members said.</p><p>A full obituary will appear in Friday&#8217;s Times Leader.</p><style>

Businessman, funeral director Andrew Mamary dies at 90
