Local roundup: Wyoming Area rallies past Valley West for baseball win

HANOVER TWP. &#8212; There&#8217;s now a tie atop Division 3 of Wyoming Valley Conference softball, but it came with some controversy Tuesday.Wyoming Seminary ended its 4-2 victory over Hanover Area with its third double play of the game &#8212; depending on the perspective.Hanover Area (9-1 Div. 3, 12-2) didn&#8217;t think the double play was legitimate. Seminary (9-1 Div. 3, 13-2) viewed it differently.Hanover Area had Emilee Bobos on third with one out in the bottom of the seventh. A single by Alessia Mangan followed by an RBI triple by Sara Tuzinski and an RBI double by Bobos gave the Hawkeyes their only runs &#8212; and only hits &#8212; of the game.After Bobos moved to third on a groundout, Kasidy Slusser ripped a low liner back to Seminary pitcher Delaney Romanchick. Romanchick caught the liner &#8212; or did she? &#8212; with her glove on the ground. She immediately threw home, but Bobos had crossed the plate with what would have been Hanover Area&#8217;s third run.Then came the controversy. The two umpires conferred and ruled Romanchick made the catch and called Bobos out for leaving third on what would have then been a tag-up situation.Game over.&#8220;She definitely caught it,&#8221; Seminary coach Steve Mytych said. &#8220;Yeah, she had her glove under it. It was more of a reaction, self-defensive I think.&#8221;Now for the rebuttal.&#8220;It&#8217;s terrible to lose a game like this on that call,&#8221; Hanover Area coach Kathy Healey said. &#8220;Because if she caught it, she would have thrown to third. But she threw home to try to get (Bobos) out at home.&#8221;It was surprising the game came down to the disputed call considering how Romanchick was pitching. She struck out 10 and had a no-hitter going into the seventh. Hanover Area had three baserunners to that point, but none had reached second. Seminary turned a 1-6-4-3 double play to end the second and a 6-4 double play in the fifth.Mangan, though, broke up the no-hitter with a blooper to center to start the seventh. Seminary center fielder Aubrey Mytych made a diving attempt but had the ball pop out of her glove as she hit the ground.Tuzinski then sliced a triple down the right-field line that bounced into the spacious foul territory, allowing Mangan to score. Bobos followed by launching a double in the right-center gap to the fence.&#8220;We&#8217;re making a rally, the kids did a good job coming back,&#8221; Healey said. &#8220;And then&#8230;&#8221;The loss overshadowed an excellent performance by Tuzinski, Hanover Area&#8217;s pitcher, a bit. She struck out 16 and allowed just three hits. Seminary, though, took advantage of all three of them.Campbell Kelly had an RBI single in the first to score Mytych, who had walked and stole her way to third.Seminary senior Tiana Wren then showed why she has been one of the league&#8217;s most feared power hitters throughout her career. Wren, who played her first three seasons at Holy Redeemer, crushed a pitch over the center field fence and the ball struck midway up a huge tree for a 2-0 lead in the third.Romanchick legged out an infield single in the sixth. She and Mytych, who reached on an error, eventually scored by taking advantage of wild pitches, passed balls and a throwing error.Hanover Area and Seminary are now at least three games up in the loss column over the rest of the division. The title could come down to a rematch on May 9 at Wyoming Seminary. Tuesday&#8217;s game was originally scheduled for April 15 but was rained out.Hazleton Area 11, Crestwood 0 (5 inn.)The Cougars defeated Crestwood thanks to a combined eight RBI from Marissa Trivelpiece and Julia Mooney.Trivelpiece finished the day with a home run and five RBI. Mooney homered and drove in three. Hazleton Area improved to 9-0 in Division 1 and 14-0 overall.The trio of Caitlyn Katchur, Gabriella Terraccino and Aleah Kost combined to shut out the Comets over five innings. Crestwood fell to 2-7 in Division 1 and 2-10 overall.Dallas 9, Wyoming Valley West 2Dallas added six insurance runs in the top of the seventh to defeat the Spartans.Samantha Kern led the Mountaineers (5-3 Div. 2, 5-8) at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Sydney Hornlein and Lindsey Hornlein each had a double and an RBI and Mia Dixon went 2-for-4 with a triple.Sydney Hornlein pitched all seven innings for Dallas to earn the win. She gave up two runs on eight hits and one walk.Morgan Shedletsky and Sara Hoskins had two hits each for Valley West (2-6 Div. 1, 3-6). Hoskins had a double.Pittston Area 10, Coughlin 0 (5 inn.)Tori Para pitched a five-inning no-hitter as Pittston Area improved to 7-1 in Division 1 and 13-1 overall. Para struck out five and missed a perfect game by allowing a walk in the third inning.Para was also 2-for-2 with four RBI. Alexa McHugh was 2-for-3 with an RBI as the Patriots banged out 13 hits.Coughlin fell to 0-9 in Division 1 and 1-13 overall.Nanticoke Area 1, Berwick 0Emily Brown knocked in the game&#8217;s only run in the bottom of the sixth as Nanticoke Area (3-6 Div. 2, 3-11) won for the third time in four games.Ali Keener tirpled for Nanticoke Area.Sarah Dent had a double for Berwick (4-4 Div. 2, 6-4).Tunkhannock 11, Wyoming Area 1 (5 inn.)Tunkhannock (8-1 Div. 2, 10-4) won its eighth in a row to maintain a two-game lead in the division.Jena Simmons homered and finished with four RBI for the Tigers. Hope Jones and Hailey Farr had three RBI each.
