Celebration of Academic Excellence held at Penn State Wilkes-Barre

<p>Special Olympians from throughout Pennsylvania were in Harrisburg recently to be recognized for their accomplishments. Among the athletes was Aaron Keller, 21, of Dorrance Township, who brought the gold and silver medals he earned earlier this year at the Special Olympics World Games held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. While at the capitol, he met with Sen. Lisa Baker, who introduced the Luzerne County Community College student during a Senate session.</p><p>&#8220;We frequently, with pride and excitement, acknowledge the efforts of athletes and squads whose ability and teamwork result in championships. It is even more heartwarming to recognize and commend the athletes joining us today,&#8221; said Baker, R-20th. &#8220;Special Olympians really are double champions. They became champions the moment they first participated in competition, rising above whatever limitations confront them. To compete in the world games in Abu Dhabi, an experience of a lifetime, and to triumph, was exhilarating for them and inspiring for us. Their winning performance comes from perseverance, and from teamwork, the encouragement and love from their parents, coaches, sponsors, and most of all, their fellow athletes.&#8221;</p><p>Upon Keller&#8217;s return from the World Games in March, a parade was held in his honor in Mountain Top.</p><p>A 2017 graduate of Crestwood High School, Keller serves as an assistant coach for the school&#8217;s cross country and track teams. He earned a gold medal in the 10,000 meter run, a silver medal in the 1500 meter run, and another silver medal in the 400 meter relay.</p><style>
