NEPA communities urge passage of Gov. Wolf’s Restore Pennsylvania plan

<p>Working in the medical field has always been a no-brainer for Ashley Jacobs. And with five years of nursing already under her belt, the 26 year-old foresees a long, wonderful road of helping people, building relationships and more ahead.</p><p>Jacobs is one of several area nurses being honored by the Times Leader for nurses week. She was nominated by her mother, Angie, who said that her daughter goes above and beyond for those she cares for.</p><p>&#8220;She is the nurse you always want for your family,&#8221; Angie wrote in her nomination letter. &#8220;She is kind, compassionate and helpful both to her patients and her co-workers. She gives 100% everyday.&#8221;</p><p>Currently, Jacobs works as a desk nurse at Wesley Village in Pittston. Admitting that she originally had plans to become a neurosurgeon, Jacobs said she switched her sights to nursing for a variety of reasons, including a desire to be more hands-on with patients.</p><p>Aside from daily patient interactions and ensuring everything runs smoothly behind-the-scenes, Jacobs noted that nursing is a field offering many doors to open. As a nurse, she can choose to work anywhere in the world through a variety of specialties.</p><p>&#8220;You can really go anywhere and do anything as a nurse from cardiac to pediatrics. It&#8217;s a profession that never gets boring,&#8221; she described of the field.</p><p>Jacobs admitted that she doesn&#8217;t have a specific story or memory that stays with her. Instead, she sees her entire nursing career as moments of pride, pain and everything in between.</p><p>&#8220;My whole career I have so many families, residents, coworkers and visitors touch my heart I can&#8217;t pick just one. I&#8217;ve worked nights and gone home broken hearted for a resident I wish could have one more day, and I&#8217;ve watched as rehab patients have walked out the door and on with a long healthy life ahead of them,&#8221; she explained.</p><p>At a time when the profession has become the center of numerous headlines in recent years, Jacobs said she felt both honored and appreciative for the opportunity to help show all that nurses do.</p><p>For students preparing to enter the field, her advice was to keep trying, study hard and try not to procrastinate. Another word of advice? Remain kind and compassionate, she said, to help make a difference every day.</p><p>Overall, entering the nursing field has helped teach Jacobs that every second counts.</p><p>&#8220;Be thankful for what you have, so many people have so little in life and still have a reason to keep going,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Seeing people at their lowest can ground you, but you take each day one and a time and if they can keep smiling - so can I.&#8221;</p><p><ins>To read more about Nurses Week, <a href="https://www.timesleader.com/tag/nurses_week" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">click here</a>.</ins></p><style>
