Maximum Security’s Preakness status unclear after Derby DQ

<p>Jack Gorham won the long jump and finished third in the triple jump Saturday while leading Wyoming Valley West to the boys championship of the James Cross Invitational at Solomon-Plains Junior High School.</p><p>The meet drew a field of 18 high school teams, including 10 from the Wyoming Valley Conference.</p><p>Wyoming Valley West outscored Meyers, 85-77, for the boys team title.</p><p>Nazir Dunell from Meyers was one of three WVC athletes to win a pair of individual events.</p><p>Dunell won both hurdles events, finishing more than a second ahead of the pack in the 300-meter hurdles and in both qualifying and the finals of the 110 high hurdles, which he won in 14.95 seconds.</p><p>Hanover Area&#8217;s Abby Korba won the triple jump by nearly two feet with 37-0 &#188; and the long jump.</p><p>Tunkhannock&#8217;s Rebecca Avery won the shot put and discus.</p><p>Scranton won the girls title with 93 points. Northwest edged Coughlin, 77-75, for second place. Hanover Area was fourth with 57, followed by Holy Redeemer with 31 and Nanticoke with 26.</p><p>Coughlin was fourth in the boys standings with 67 points, three behind third-place Scranton. Northwest, Hanover Area and GAR finished in sixth through eighth places.</p><p>Cole Graham won the discus for Valley West with a throw of 134-5.</p><p>Meyers won the 1600 and 3200 relays and got an 800 win from Angel Rodriguez.</p><p>Coughlin led the way in sprinting with a 400 relay title and victories by Rafael McCoy in the 100 and Jude Bourdeau in the 200.</p><p>Jervone Young won the shot put by more than 5 &#189; feet with 47-10 &#190;.</p><p>Northwest&#8217;s Matt Saxe had another of the day&#8217;s most dominant efforts. His javelin throw of 186-6 was more than 25 feet beyond the rest of the field.</p><p>GAR&#8217;s Curtis Smith won the high jump and Tunkhannock&#8217;s Dalton Yeust won the pole vault.</p><p>Catherine Shuleski gave Coughlin its only girls win in the 3200.</p><p>Hanover Area won four girls events with Korba&#8217;s two victories, Isabella Popson in the high jump and the 3200 relay team.</p><p>Northwest got wins in the 3200 relay and from Ariana Walker in the 300 hurdles.</p><p>Nanticoke&#8217;s Abby Cullen won the javelin.</p><p>The WVC is heading into the final week of the regular season.</p><p>The District 2 Championships are scheduled for May 13 (2A) and 14 (3A) at Scranton Memorial Stadium.</p><style>
