D2 track championships: Newcomers help lead WVC boys in 2A

SCRANTON &#8212; The cherry on top came after the Holy Redeemer girls track and field team already had the team championship locked.As it would have it, the Royals had one more surprise in store: breaking a 10-year district record in the 1600 relay.Holy Redeemer came from behind to upset Western Wayne in resounding fashion Wednesday at the District 2 Class 2A Girls Track and Field Championships. Down by as many as 19 points in fourth place, the Royals won in resounding fashion to secure their first title since 2016.&#8220;We all worked so hard this entire season &#8211; from the winter time until here,&#8221; Holy Redeemer junior Cameron Marcinkowski said. &#8220;We&#8217;re all very dedicated. We&#8217;re always working so. It&#8217;s well-deserving.&#8221;Most impressively, none of the Royals&#8217; 125 points came from a senior.The Royals&#8217; nightcap was breaking Blue Ridge&#8217;s 2009 record in the 1600 relay. Abby Lapinski rushed out to a two-second lead, and Western Wayne caught up to Anna Capaci at the midway point. Madison Dewees ran three seconds faster the field, and Karissa Spade ran a sub-minute heat to finish at 4:04.15.&#8220;It was really exciting because we weren&#8217;t expecting it at all,&#8221; Capaci said. &#8220;It&#8217;s great to be part of a team that&#8217;s so positive. We support each other through everything.&#8221;Trailing by 18.5 points, Holy Redeemer used a one-two finish in the 800 to fuel its turnaround well after the halfway point of the meet. Facing a two-second deficit, Capaci paced her way with fierce determination to finish in 2:24.6 for first place. Dewees came from behind to take second place in 2:26.9, putting the Royals&#8217; within arm&#8217;s reach of the lead.&#8220;I just told myself and Madison that we needed to stay relaxed,&#8221; I don&#8217;t think I could have done it without her. We were encouraging each other the whole time, telling each other how excited we were.&#8221;Unknowing that the team race was in the balance, Marcinkowski sealed the championship in the 3200. She broke her PR by more than 12 seconds with an 11:47.44. She was in a dead heat with Elk Lake&#8217;s Krista Jones and broke away by five seconds in the last lap.Spade was the Wyoming Valley Conference&#8217;s lone multi-event winner. She legged out the 100 dash in 12.59 seconds. Spade leapfrogged the Royals into the lead with her 25.86-second victory over GAR&#8217;s Kaiya Coleman in the 200 dash.&#8220;I feel amazing about my springs &#8211; amazing,&#8221; Spade said. &#8220;I couldn&#8217;t say anything about my times. I&#8217;m at a loss for words.&#8221;Lehman Takes Four GoldsLake-Lehman has made a name for itself as a 3200 relay juggernaut. The Black Knights came into the day with three-straight wins and two-straight state medals in the event. But it was Lake-Lehman&#8217;s 400 relay that had the most notable run of the day.Entering with only the sixth-fastest seed in the field, the Black Knights&#8217; quartet of Kitt Patla, Gabby Shonis, Keera Naugle and Natasha Mihalko raced to a 51.85-second victory, just a hundredth of a second shy of a school record.Kitt Patla took an early lead from the gun, and near-perfect exchanges between Shonis and Naugle gave the Knights&#8217; a fighting chance. Mihalko held off Northwest&#8217;s Miya Roman by a tenth of a second, putting her hands in her face with a look of disbelief at the finish.&#8220;I was very surprised; I didn&#8217;t think we were going to win,&#8221; Mihalko joked. &#8220;I thought the other people were going to pass me, and I was going to be like, &#8216;Oh crap&#8217;. Everything went perfect. The handoffs were good. The running was good.&#8221;Not to be outdid in terms of excitement, the Black Knights&#8217; 3200 relay of Sophia Dabsheh, Madison Brdaric, Morgan Patla and Abby Paczewski needed a last-chance comeback on the last 100 meters to start the day with a first place finish.The only returner from last year&#8217;s state medal team, Paczewski took over the anchor in second place and trailed by two seconds on the last lap. Paczewski passed Lakeland on the final turn and sped to a 10-second win with a time of 9:59.03.Paczewski returned to win the 1600 in 5:17.94. She finished her exhaustive day with a third place finish in the 3200, running nearly an entire 5K throughout the day.&#8220;I had to keep eating bananas, and I don&#8217;t like bananas,&#8221; Paczewski said. &#8220;Everyone was making fun of me that I was going to be on the banana overload. I just kept resting when I could run every race without being hurt.&#8221;Her teammate on both track and soccer teams, Sarah Salus claimed her second straight title in the javelin. She measured at 115 feet, 7 inches to return to states.&#8220;It was expected for me to go to states again,&#8221; Salus said. &#8220;There was more pressure because I knew I should be going.&#8221;WVC jumpers finish on topNorthwest&#8217;s Ariana Walker shocked herself by winning the long jump. Never having medaled at districts before, Walker had a disappointing first two jumps. With the pressure mounting to make finals, she leaped 16 feet, 7 1/4 inches to earn the tiebreaker.&#8220;I was really just thinking, &#8216;Imagine a bunch of people cheering you on&#8217;,&#8221; Walker said. &#8220;Honestly, that helps me a lot.
