PIAA GIRLS LACROSSE: Wyoming Seminary falls in first round

<p class="x_MsoNormal">LEHMAN TWP. &#8211; Anthony Caporuscio needed just 5:16 Tuesday night to remove Lewsiburg graduate Matt Fedorjaka from the list of state record-holders.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">Caporuscio and his Crestwood teammates were forced to wait overnight before completing their likely removal of Lewisburg from the state tournament.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">After an hour-long lightning delay, the PIAA Class 2A boys lacrosse game at Lake-Lehman was suspended 59 seconds before halftime with Crestwood in front, 8-0.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">The teams are scheduled to return to action Wednesday at 4 p.m. on the same field.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">Caporuscio had three of the goals, along with two assists. He scored three times in 2 &#189; minutes for a 5-0 Crestwood lead with 4:14 left in the first quarter.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">The junior attacker&#8217;s first goal, from a tough angle, broke a tie with Fedorjaka, a 2016 graduate, with 303 career goals.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">Caporuscio, who has surgery tentatively scheduled next week for a foot injury that he has played through all season, tied the record in Friday&#8217;s District 2 championship game victory.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">After Crestwood took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter, Lewisburg became more competitive in the second quarter.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">&#8220;I think our guys may have been in awe a little bit,&#8221; Lewisburg coach John Vaji said.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">Crestwood put itself close to advancing to the state quarterfinals for the third straight year. That task still needs to be completed when the game resumes.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">A win would send the Comets into Saturday&#8217;s state quarterfinal against Lancaster Country Day, a 13-9 winner over Cardinal O&#8217;Hara from Philadelphia.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">Wyatt Malia scored twice for Crestwood Tuesday. Sean Murphy and T.J. Kulak had a goal and an assist.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">Trey Zabroski scored and Nick Curry had an assist.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">Crestwood built a 21-6 shot lead.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">Connor McCollum made seven saves for Lewisburg. Two of them came in the last 33 seconds of the first quarter during a stretch in which Crestwood also hit the crossbar.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">The PIAA went ahead with Tuesday&#8217;s doubleheader at Lake-Lehman despite forecasts of thunderstorms and a tornado watch in the area.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">The girls game between Lampeter-Strasburg and Wyoming Seminary was completed without incident and the boys teams had a 20-minute warmup before starting seven minutes ahead of the scheduled 6 p.m. opening faceoff.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">That turned out to not be quite early enough.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">When the game was halted, teams headed for the school to take cover and spectators were asked to leave the stadium. Multiple lightning flashes each required a 30-minute wait from that point until game officials ultimately decided to send the teams home.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">The game would have needed to make it through three quarters before it could have become official if the outcome was clear.</p><style>
