Pittston man sentenced on indecent assault charge

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; A Scranton man will have to wear an electronic ankle bracelet for six months as part of his sentence for initiating a pursuit with state police through Wilkes-Barre and Hanover Township.</p><p>State police charged Khalil Churief Roman Owens, 26, with failing to stop a Nissan Maxima when a trooper spotted the vehicle without headlights on Carey Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, just before 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 15.</p><p>Court records say Owens accelerated and turned onto New Alexander Street and Old River Road where his vehicle jumped the curb and continued on the sidewalk for about 200 feet before he returned to the road, reaching speeds of 75 mph in a 35-mph zone.</p><p>Owens continued on Old River Road, which turns into Carey Avenue at Dagobert Street, where he passed through a red traffic signal, court records say.</p><p>Police said Owens turned into oncoming traffic to pass a vehicle and drove into Hanover Township, reaching speeds in excess of 100 mph on the Sans Souci Parkway.</p><p>Owens continued on the parkway and made a U-turn near the Sans Souci Brick and Stone Yard.</p><p>Police said Owens turned onto Saint Marys Road and pulled onto a dirt road where he abandoned the Nissan.</p><p>Owens was initially charged with multiple traffic violations, possession of a small amount of marijuana, reckless endangerment and fleeing or attempting to elude police.</p><p>Luzerne County prosecutors withdrew all of the charges in exchange for Owens pleading guilty to fleeing to attempt to elude police in a negotiated plea agreement April 2.</p><p>Judge Joseph Sklarosky Jr. sentenced Owens on Wednesday to 48 months in the county&#8217;s Intermediate Punishment Program with the first six months on house arrest with electronic monitoring.</p><style>
