H.S. Softball: Hazleton Area rolls past Delaware Valley for District 2 Class 6A title

<p>HUGHESTOWN &#8212; Over the last several years, the Wyoming Seminary softball team wasn&#8217;t a force in the Wyoming Valley Conference or in District 2.</p><p>This season, the Blue Knights took a major step forward, claiming the WVC Division 3 title and advancing to the District 2 Class 3A Championship Game.</p><p>In Friday&#8217;s district title clash, the Blue Knights fell short of a gold medal and a berth in the PIAA tournament, dropping a 4-1 decision to Mid Valley at Pittston Area Primary Center.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a good learning experience for us and for myself,&#8221; Sem coach Steve Mytych said. &#8220;Being a wrestling coach and transitioning into a softball coach, going in blind. I learned a lot today just playing against Mid Valley. &#8230; I think they&#8217;re going to make a great state run. And I hope they win it. That&#8217;ll show that we&#8217;re right there in the mix.&#8221;</p><p>Mid Valley, which will play the District 4 champion in Monday&#8217;s state opener, got clutch hits and strong pitching en route to its second district title in three years. And the top three hitters in the lineup, Danielle Jason, Lindsey Jason and Lacy Harrington combined for six hits, scored all four runs and accounted for three RBI.</p><p>The Spartans scored the first run of the game in the top of the first in a RBI-single by Harrington. They added two more in the third on a run-scoring double by Lindsey Jason and a single by Kaylee Terranella to score the third run of the game for a 3-0 lead.</p><p>&#8220;We had some good scouting reports on (Wyoming Seminary),&#8221; Mid Valley coach Mike Piercy said. &#8220;That&#8217;s one thing we put a lot of time in on, preparing our team for what to expect. So I think that played a big role today as well.&#8221;</p><p>The Blue Knights threatened in every inning except the first by getting the leadoff batter on base each time, but Mid Valley starter Mackenzie Mitchko got out of the jam every time except when Sem pushed a run across in the sixth on an RBI single by Akira Kopec to cut the lead to 3-1.</p><p>Sem tallied six hits, a walk and a hit batter, but Mid Valley also got strong defense, turning two double plays and cutting down a runner at third on a fielder&#8217;s choice three times.</p><p>&#8220;They just played great defensively,&#8221; Mytych said. &#8220;It is what it is.
