Your view: State needs to consider safety of corrections officers

<p>Anthony Caporuscio did not want surgery to shorten or endanger his junior season at Crestwood.</p><p>So, Caporuscio delayed the surgery, ignored the pain and played a major role in extending the longest lacrosse season in District 2 history.</p><p>Caporuscio is scheduled to have surgery to repair the fifth metatarsal in his foot repaired Thursday.</p><p>If the Comets can pull off an upset of defending champion Bishop Shanahan Tuesday at Emmaus Memorial Field at 5 in a Class 2A boys game that is the first state semifinal appearance by a District 2 team, Caporuscio will happily ask his doctor for a new surgery date.</p><p>&#8220;I actually hurt it way back in football season in the last game of the season,&#8221; said Caporuscio, a junior attacker. &#8220;I saw a doctor later and he told me it was not going to heal up until I got surgery. I did not want to risk getting surgery for the season and having to sit out for too long, so I figured I would stick it out and play the rest of the season on it.&#8221;</p><p>That plan was temporarily sidetracked when he aggravated the injury in an early-season loss to York Catholic and had to sit out three games.</p><p>When Caporuscio came back, he immediately returned to full speed because he said that is how every one of his teammates plays.</p><p>&#8220;Ever since then, I&#8217;ve managed it pretty well and the athletic trainer has been awesome helping out with that,&#8221; Caporuscio said.</p><p>The results, both individually and for the team, have been staggering.</p><p>Caporuscio already owned two state records, according to laxrecords.com/Pennsylvania, when the season started. Now, he has a third with 315 career goals.</p><p>Crestwood already had two straight Wyoming Valley Conference and District 2 titles. Now, the Comets have a third of each and, in their third attempt, have made it to the state semifinals for the first time ever.</p><p>&#8220;By Anthony playing at the pace he plays at and the level he plays at, it forces everybody else to also play at that pace,&#8221; Crestwood coach Brian Zabroski said. &#8220;In the end, we have a better team for it. I don&#8217;t just look at the goals he puts in. I look at what he does to help us be a good, strong team overall.&#8221;</p><p>The Comets have won 13 of 14 games, averaging exactly 20 goals per game during that stretch, to improve to 18-5 overall.</p><p>During the state tournament, Caporuscio has gone over the 100-goal mark for the second straight season, becoming the first Pennsylvania player to do so, and set the state career goal record.</p><p>&#8220;Anthony plays through pain,&#8221; Zabroski said. &#8220;As you can see, once that game starts and that adrenaline starts moving, Anthony just washes that all out and he just goes in there and does his thing.&#8221;</p><p>Caporuscio&#8217;s sophomore season saw him scored 126 goals and add 69 assists in 24 games. He broke the season goal record of Manheim Township&#8217;s John Dubois, set in 2017 with 118, and his 195 points easily broke the two-year-old record of 179 set by Upper Dublin&#8217;s Michael Sowers.</p><p>Bishop Shanahan&#8217;s program also boasts some impressive numbers.</p><p>Coach Jon Heisman ranks third in state history in career wins with a 476-134 record, including 20-1 this season. Heisman has coached the Eagles for nine seasons after also making Springfield-Delco and West Chester East two of Pennsylvania&#8217;s strongest programs while coaching there.</p><p>Tuesday&#8217;s semifinalists have one common opponent.</p><p>Bishop Shanahan, which is located in Downingtown, opened the state tournament with an 18-4 win over Scranton Prep. Crestwood defeated Scranton Prep, 19-8, during the WVC season and, 20-8, in the District 2 final.</p><style>
