JCC event to recall Jewish refugee boat that was turned away in 1939

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Wednesday marks one century since 92 miners died and 44 were injured in the Delaware &amp; Hudson Coal Company&#8217;s Baltimore Mine tunnel No. 2, and King&#8217;s College plans to mark the milestone with a community Commemoration slated for 10 a.m. at the site of the historical marker.</p><p>An invocation will open the event, with remarks from King&#8217;s College history department members followed by a reading of the proclamation from the state senate, sponsored by Sen. John Yudichak, D-Nanticoke, and Sen. Lisa Baker, R-Lehman Township.</p><p>King&#8217;s had an active role in getting the marker dedicated in January, 2014. It was a joint project of the college and the city of Wilkes-Barre. To mark the solemnity of the disaster, the names of the 92 miners killed in it will be read.</p><p>The historical marker is at the intersections of Pine and Spring Streets in Wilkes Barre, a grassy patch near the entrance of the Spring Street Plaza, which contains a Home Depot center and Raymour &amp; Flanigan. If weather doesn&#8217;t cooperate, the event will be moved to the third flooor of the Campus Center between North Main and North Franklin Streets, and between West Union and West Jackson.</p><style>
