Luzerne County assessment database still down Thursday

<p>NANTICOKE &#8212; The Greater Nanticoke Area School Board passed a final budget with no tax increase that projects a $151,000 surplus for 2019-20. It also used a procedural maneuver to give Superintendent Ron Grevera a new contract with a bigger pay raise despite two years remaining on his current contract.</p><p>Business Consultant Albert Melone said the district was able to find enough savings in the new budget to keep property taxes at this year&#8217;s rate of 11.9113 mills. A mill is a $1 tax on every $1,000 of assessed property value. Melone said that, if the projected surplus develops, it will increase the district&#8217;s fund balance to $4.45 million. The new budget calls for total spending of $30.97 million.</p><p>Regarding Grevera, he had two years remaining on a seven-year contract, but the board voted to accept his resignation, effective June 30, and to approve a new contract running from July 1 this year through June 30, 2024. After the meeting, Grevera said the new contract also increased his annual raises from 2 percent a year to 4 percent a year.</p><p>According to state data, Grevera&#8217;s salary last year was $129,225.</p><p>The board also:</p><p>&#8226; Approved Joyce Insurance group&#8217;s proposal for worker&#8217;s compensation at a premium not to exceed $98,502.</p><p>&#8226; Approved the purchase of a new high school cafeteria dishwasher for $32,760 from Rice Food Equipment and consulting, and awarded a contract to Vishnefski Electrical Inc. to install electrical equipment and replace the circuit breaker panel for installation of the dishwasher at a cost of $5,375.</p><style>
