Jigsaw masters persevere,finish challenging puzzle

<p>If hats had feelings, they probably wouldn&#8217;t want to be stashed away on a shelf.</p><p>Or in a closet. Or in the attic.</p><p>No, they&#8217;d most likely want to come out and see the sun. And shield their owners from the sun. And show off their ribbons and flowers and netting.</p><p>Wednesday afternoon at the Irem Clubhouse in Dallas, all sorts of hats, glorious hats, had a chance to shine as the women of the Wilkes University Polish Room Committee and their guests gathered for their annual tea.</p><p>&#8220;This is the first time I&#8217;ve worn it in a year,&#8221; Josephine Kline, of Plains Township, said of her hat.</p><p>Anne Konopelski, also of Plains Township, has a collection of hats and wears them a little more often. &#8220;I&#8217;ll wear one on Derby Day and I have a beauty salon and I&#8217;ll wear one there just to goof around.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;This one probably dates back to the 1940s,&#8221; said Susan Najaka of Glen Lyon, recalling how previous generations of women felt their outfits were complete when they had a complementary headpiece. &#8220;Ladies used to wear hats to church and special occasions,&#8221; she said.</p><p>Najaka, of Glen Lyon, coordinated the tea for the Polish Room Committee with her neighbor and fellow committee member, Mary Lou Zaleski.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a minor fund-raiser, not a major one but a minor one,&#8221; Zaleski said, explaining the committee raises money for scholarships it grants to Wilkes University students of Polish descent.</p><p>The group also maintains the Wilkes University Polish Room, which is filled with books and artifacts, on the second floor of the university&#8217;s library. Their next event will be in the fall, when committee members bring homemade ethnic dishes to the library to share with members of the Wilkes community.</p><p>In December the committee holds its annual Christmas-time celebration, the Wigilia, and awards the scholarships.</p><p>Anyone interested in joining the club may call Bernadine Tarasek at 570-824-8323.</p><style>
