Family rings up $1,267 in United Way/Wegmans shopping spree

<p>At The Canning House, you might come for the food and stay to admire the artwork.</p><p>Or you might come for the artwork and stay for the food</p><p>Or you might consider the food on the menu &#8212; from kombucha on tap to spring frittatas to turkey sandwiches &#8212; to be works of art.</p><p>&#8220;We&#8217;re excited about serving food that is honest and thoughtful,&#8221; said Matthew Magda, chef at the new eatery at 900 Rutter Ave. in Forty Fort.</p><p>Here the eggs come from free-range chickens; the meat is free of antibiotics and hormones; the veggies are non-GMO.</p><p>&#8220;We get locally grown food from Pumpkin Hill Produce,&#8221; said Connor Scalleat, who is co-owner of The Canning House with his partner, Natalie Lynn.</p><p>The Canning House is affiliated with two other restaurants in the Scalleat Hospitality Group &#8212; The Powerhouse Eatery in White Haven and the Ovalon Bar &amp; Grill in Hazleton.</p><p>As an article in the May/June/July issue of Essence of Maines magazine explains, each of the restaurants&#8217; names &#8220;pays homage to the history of the buildings and the purpose they once possessed. Powerhouse Eatery contains the foundational bones of an old coal-to-steam power plant, Ovalon no longer features its oval-shaped bar but has preserved the establishment&#8217;s post-World War II character, and The Canning House was formerly a canning facility.&#8221;</p><p>The Canning House location, more recently home to Canteen 900, now boasts tables and chairs its co-owners painted with colorful chalk paint. And, if you glance at the ceiling, you&#8217;ll be sure to notice the chandelier that once graced The Hotel Sterling.</p><p>&#8220;I think I have chandelier PTSD,&#8221; Scalleat said with a laugh, explaining how the fixture was recently lowered to the floor so its many parts could be painstakingly washed by hand. &#8220;If you go under it and look up you&#8217;ll see 55 light bulbs.&#8221;</p><p>Another effort to brighten the restaurant&#8217;s ambience is a huge mural of singer/songwriter John Lennon that local artists Alan McLaughlin and Jordan Semar recently completed on an inside wall. They&#8217;re hoping it will inspire other business owners to invite artists to work their magic on blank walls.</p><p>&#8220;Every blank wall is a potential canvas,&#8221; Semar said.</p><p>&#8220;We want to promote happiness, progress imagination and positive &#8212; and a lot of color,&#8221; McLaughlin said, adding the duo hope their art will get people to pause &#8220;and forget about all the horrible stuff in the world, all the divisiveness.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;To us, art is like music,&#8221; Semar said. &#8220;Everyone can get an emotional response.&#8221;</p><p>Other art you&#8217;ll find at The Canning House includes a Forrest Gump series created by an artist known simply as Frank from Miami, and an elephant painting created by California artist Matt Shapira.</p><p>&#8220;It can be a conversation starter&#8221; about conservation, Lynn said of Shapira&#8217;s work.</p><p>Her own creations, which you can sample at The Canning House&#8217;s kombucha bar, includes many flavors of the fermented beverage she makes from tea and honey.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s so good for you,&#8221; Lynn said, noting some customers have told her kombucha eases their digestive complaints.</p><p>&#8220;I always liked making things and putting things together,&#8221; said Lynn, whose flavors include beets and berries, strawberry basil and blueberry pomegranate.</p><p>She has been brewing kombucha for five years and in 2018 was named Entrepreneur of the Year at the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals Awards presentation. </p><p>The Canning House is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. Starting June 30 it will be open on Sundays, too, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.</p><style>
