US Attorney rejects Ciavarella book claims

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Ten years ago this month, Pauline Makowski lost her husband, Allan Makowski Sr., to stage 4 lung cancer.</p><p>For the ninth year in a row, Makowski will join friends, family, survivors and supporters on Sunday to walk, run and share their stories in an effort to raise funds for battling the disease.</p><p>&#8220;I was absolutely heartbroken that I couldn&#8217;t help him,&#8221; Makowski said of her husband&#8217;s final illness.</p><p>That&#8217;s why she continues to work to help others as organizer of the annual Breathe Deep NEPA 5K Walk &amp; Fun Run.</p><p>It is in support of LUNGevity, a national nonprofit dedicated to promoting early diagnosis and treatment research, begins with check-in at Kirby Park at 9 a.m. Sunday.</p><p>The program will begin at 10 a.m., Makowski said, with remarks by television news anchor Mark Hiller and also by a lung cancer survivor. The walk and fun run are scheduled to begin at 10:30.</p><p>This year&#8217;s fundraising goal is $20,000.</p><p>Makowski had some help hitting that goal on Wednesday when the Wilkes-Barre POWER! professional group hosted a fundraiser during its June meeting, which was held at Canteen Park on Market Street in Kingston.</p><p>The event generated $475, she said.</p><p>Each month, POWER! chooses an area nonprofit group to raise funds for during its gatherings.</p><p>Lung cancer accounts for 25 percent of all cancer deaths in this country, claiming an estimated 154,000 lives in 2018, according to LUNGevity statistics &#8212; more than the next three most common cancers combined &#8212; yet the disease receives only 6 percent of all federal research dollars.</p><p>For those interested in participating in Sunday&#8217;s event, online registration will be available until 3 p.m. today at <a href="https://lungevity.org/nepa" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">https://lungevity.org/nepa</a>. After that, participants can register on the day of the event at Kirby Park.</p><p>Major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover), checks, and cash will be accepted at the event, which is set to take place rain or shine.</p><p>For more information, visit the event&#8217;s web page and click on the FAQs tab.</p><style>
