SWOYERSVILLE &#8212; Mickey Moorhead and Marina Martino led a record field of over 120 runners in the Wyoming Valley Striders 2-Mile Run at Murphy&#8217;s Pub on Saturday.Moorhead, 25, of Philadelphia and formerly from Wilkes-Barre, crossed the finish line in 10 minutes, 45 seconds. He out-distanced second-place finisher, John Martino, 35, of Dallas, by 23 seconds&#8220;(John Martino) and I ran together early in the race (over the downhill start on Slocum Street),&#8221; Moorhead said. &#8220;Then, a quarter of a mile into the race, I began to race harder and moved in front. At about half mile, I pushed it and opened up a lead.&#8220;At the turns, I could see I had a comfortable lead. From then to the finish, I stayed relaxed and tried to stay at a steady pace. With a quarter of a mile to go, I pushed hard to the finish.&#8221;Marina Martino won top female honors with a third-place overall finish in 11:36. Jill Sosnoski, 39, of Wilkes-Barre, finished second among women with a ninth-place finish in 13:44.&#8220;I wasn&#8217;t expecting to run run,&#8221; Marina Martino said. &#8220;I was just going to run while pushing my son in a stroller. Then, I got the word &#8212; no strollers allowed. So I said, &#8216;OK, then I will bury your field.&#8217; But I told (husband John), &#8216;Don&#8217;t worry, I&#8217;ll let you beat me.&#8217; And decided to give it a go.&#8221;Martino found somebody to watch over her son, Jonas Fritz Martino, and ran ran to victory.NotesMarina (Orrson) Martino gave birth to Jonas less than five months ago. She has been the area&#8217;s top female runner for nearly six years before taking a break during her pregnancy. But earlier in the week she finished third among women at the Wilkes-Barre YMCA 3-mile race on Independence Day &#8212; she&#8217;s back!Moorhead ran for Coughlin High School and Drexel University. He is a two-time winner of the Run Around the (Harveys) Lake.
