<p>For his next trick, what kind of magic will Quentin Tarantino pull off this time?</p><p>Tarantino returns to theaters this week with &#8220;Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,&#8221; starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie. His ninth film takes a look at the city of stars in 1969 during the time of the Manson family murders. DiCaprio plays Rick Dalton, a fading movie star who is at a crossroads in his career, and Pitt is Cliff Booth, Dalton&#8217;s friend and stunt double. They live in the neighborhood of Sharon Tate (Robbie), who unfortunately becomes a victim of the murderous cult.</p><p>A common thread in Tarantino movies is there&#8217;s going to be music weaved into the plot. Often anachronistic, the song choices don&#8217;t fit the period the movie and characters are set, but the uses give an unnerving feeling to a scene. So far, there&#8217;s music from Los Bravos, the Mamas and the Papas, Paul Revere and the Raiders and Neil Diamond if the tunes from the trailer and commercials hold up. These 1960s tunes fit in with the overall vibe, but perhaps there will be a few surprises later.</p><p>Take, for example, having an early hit from the White Stripes near the start of Tarantino&#8217;s last movie, 2015&#8217;s &#8220;The Hateful Eight.&#8221; The western set in the 1800s starring Samuel L. Jackson, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Kurt Russell leaves a group of villains stuck in a cabin during a snowstorm. Unlike many of Tarantino&#8217;s films, this one mostly features a score by noted Italian composer Ennio Morricone, but &#8220;Apple Blossom&#8221; from the White Stripes&#8217; 2000 album &#8220;De Stijl&#8221; finds a suitable place in the film.</p><p>When the music is as much as an ode to a movie style he loves as the full product, Tarantino goes full out. His 1997&#8217;s &#8220;Jackie Brown&#8221; encompasses the marriage between characters and music much like the blaxploitation movies to which he pays tribute in the thriller. Pam Grier, the queen of the genre, stars in the film adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel, &#8220;Rum Punch.&#8221; Jackson, Michael Keaton, and Robert Forster also star. For the music, some of the tunes featured in the film and its soundtrack were already iconic with other blaxploitation flicks, including &#8220;Across 110th Street&#8221; by Bobby Womack and Peace for the film by the same name and Grier&#8217;s song, &#8220;Long Time Woman.&#8221; from &#8220;The Big Doll House.&#8221; Other hits like &#8220;Didn&#8217;t I (Blow Your Mind This Time)&#8221; by the Delfonics and &#8220;Strawberry Letter 23&#8221; by the Brothers Johnson play pivotal roles in the film.</p><p>Perhaps what most Tarantino fans remember the most would be the twist contest in 1994&#8217;s &#8220;Pulp Fiction.&#8221; Featuring John Travolta as Vincent Vega, and Uma Thurman as Mia Wallace, a sequence unfolds inside Jack Rabbit Slims for a twist contest. Vega, who works as a killer for Mia&#8217;s gangster husband, must entertain her. That includes trying out a $5 milkshake and entering the twist contest. Set to Chuck Berry&#8217;s &#8220;You Never Can Tell,&#8221; this sequence is a break from the plethora of violence that floods this film. It&#8217;s also influenced by another iconic dance sequence featured in Jean-Luc Godard&#8217;s French New Wave film &#8220;Bande &#224; Part&#8221; where the three leads dance the Madison inside a cafe.</p><p>Sometimes Tarantino&#8217;s music choices also hint that a different direction is about to be taken. In 2009&#8217;s &#8220;Inglourious Basterds,&#8221; David Bowie&#8217;s &#8220;Cat People&#8221; makes a harsh entry into a scene when Shosanna (M&#233;lanie Laurent) is about to act out her revenge against the Nazis in 1940s France. Before this, the movie was heavy with instrumental works, and suddenly a song from 1982 shows up. As the audience expects for the film to follow in line with history, from this point it does not, creating a surprising turn for viewers.</p><p>And while most of Tarantino&#8217;s films feature previously released music, &#8220;Django Unchained&#8221; had tunes composed for it. The film, which Tarantino called a &#8220;Southerner,&#8221; starred Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Jackson and DiCaprio. Foxx composed one of the original songs, &#8220;100 Black Coffins,&#8221; for rapper Rick Ross that was set in the film&#8217;s center. The lyrics previewed what Django (Foxx) was about to do once he reached the plantation of Calvin J. Candie (DiCaprio) to free his wife, Broomhilda (Kerry Washington).</p><p>&#8220;Once Upon a Time in Hollywood&#8221; opens Friday.</p><style>
