Keystone Games: Gilbert gets support en route to United Way 5K victory

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Kyle Thomas and Chase Smith each exceeded their average in all three games Saturday morning at Chacko&#8217;s during the youth finals portion of the Keystone State Games bowling competition.</p><p>Thomas claimed the 11-and-under mixed handicap title by using a fast start to overcome a consistent effort from Smith.</p><p>The 10-year-old from Plymouth, who bowls in youth leagues twice a week at Chacko&#8217;s, posted a handicap score of 660. Thomas, who has a 144 average, used games of 164, 168 and 148 for a 480 plus his 180 handicap.</p><p>Smith took the silver medal with games of 154, 156 and 158 for a 468-162-630 series.</p><p>There were a total of 11 youth entries at Chacko&#8217;s for qualifying Friday &#8211; although none were eliminated in that stage &#8211; and finals Saturday.</p><p>The bowling competition continued with doubles finals later Saturday and qualifying in the adult division. The adult singles division finals are scheduled for Sunday, beginning at 9 a.m.</p><p>Thomas and Smith had also finished first and second out of three competitors in their division during Friday&#8217;s session.</p><p>Anthony Pollock, 14, from Hunlock Creek won another closely contested division.</p><p>Pollock took the male 12-15 handicap title with 170-156-181 for 507, which was added to the 186 handicap, based on his 142 average, for a score of 693.</p><p>Anthony Tomasso fell 15 pins short. The 155-average bowler rolled games of 174-161-187 for a total of 522-156-678.</p><p>Again, both bowlers were over their average in each game.</p><p>With the light turnout, multiple gold medals were awarded uncontested.</p><p>The bowlers claiming those titles, however, did put together some impressive scores.</p><p>Dallas&#8217; Cole Oberst rolled 220-246-246&#8212;712 in the 12-15 male scratch division.</p><p>Joshua Nebe, the 16-20 male handicap winner, had games of 258-223-214 for a 695-90-785 total.</p><p>Maribeth Baker was the 12-15 female scratch champion with 200-185-208&#8212;592.</p><p>Other winners included: April Best, 12-15 female handicap, 512-156-668; Gregory Matyjevich, 16-20 male scratch, 592; and Wilkes-Barre&#8217;s Chloe Sromovski , 16-20 female scratch, 568.</p><style>
