Colonels look to continue to grow the program

<p>Happy Labor Day weekend!</p><p>The coveted three-day weekend for many is here, and I&#8217;m sure those that are able to are appreciating the welcomed reprieve from the hectic work world.</p><p>That&#8217;s what Labor Day is all about, after all.</p><p>It&#8217;s a time when paces should slow and offices should sit quiet. In this day and age it&#8217;s difficult to do, but necessary for self-care and to avoid burnout.</p><p>It&#8217;s important to remember that your work is only a piece of you, and that so many other factors come together to define you.</p><p>On this hopefully labor-less weekend, maybe you can cook out (if the rain holds up), enjoy family time or simply do nothing at all.</p><p>For those inclined to get out of the house, I have a recommendation.</p><p>Valley with a Heart&#8217;s 19th annual benefit ride and family picnic is taking place at St. Faustina Grove in Nanticoke on Sunday (today if you are reading this in print). Registration begins as early as 8 a.m. for the 11 a.m. ride. Besides the ride, it&#8217;s a day filled with food, kids&#8217; game, raffles and music (15 bands on two stages) all day.</p><p>The bands include The Soovanears, Breakdown Jimmy, The Hot Rods, Sister Esther, Little Kreek, OZ, Idol Kings, Iron Cowboy, Halfway to Hell, Rockology Music Academy, Runnin&#8217; on Whiskey, Delta Thunder, Random Rock, Big Country and 40lb. Head.</p><p>The benefit has been helping families since 2001, raising money for children with serious medical issues.</p><p>This year, the event supports 14-year-old Alexandre Bain and 4-year-old Jayla Green, as well as other children in need.</p><p>It is also being held in memory of Paula Samselski, a friend of mine who was a devoted advocate and supporter of the event. Each year she marveled at its success and was thrilled to be a part of something that was helping so many. Since her passing a few months ago, it&#8217;s only fitting this event is in her memory in 2019. More information is available on their website: www.valleywithaheart.com.</p><p>In other event news, I&#8217;ve been asked to be a guest caller at the Friends of Hoyt Library&#8217;s purse bingo next Sunday, Sept. 8 at Holy Family Hall in Luzerne.</p><p>It starts at 1 p.m., and I&#8217;ll be calling at 2.</p><p>I&#8217;ve never attended one of these before, but I hear they get competitive.</p><p>I&#8217;m looking forward to seeing many West Side folks there since I grew up in Kingston.</p><p>If you&#8217;ll be there make sure you come say hi, and hopefully I will call all the right numbers so that you win the bag you&#8217;ve been eyeing up.</p><style>
