L&I offers reminders about job rules for teens during the school year

WILKES-BARRE &#8212; For as long as he can remember, George May never did embrace a passive approach to running with a football.Other backs may take to making flashy moves and dashing cuts. But those head-on collisions just make May&#8217;s day.&#8220;I like being the hammer,&#8221; May said, &#8220;not the nail.&#8221;He pounded that mantra all over Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium.May rumbled for 93 yards on 16 carries and scored two touchdowns Saturday as Northwest nailed Holy Redeemer, 43-7 to spoil the debut of new Royals head coach Tyson Kelley.&#8220;I just lower my shoulders, then I run through holes,&#8221; May shrugged. &#8220;I don&#8217;t like being pushed around, I don&#8217;t like going down.&#8221;The Rangers sure liked what they saw from their senior tailback.All of May&#8217;s carries and yards came in the first half, when Northwest rolled to a 35-0 lead and triggered a running clock through the final two quarters.&#8220;It feels good,&#8221; May said. &#8220;I love running the ball. That&#8217;s my favorite thing to do.&#8221;None of May&#8217;s runs resulted in head-turning numbers &#8212; his longest gain went for 10 yards &#8212; but his workman-like performance produced touchdown runs of 5 and 2 yards while giving the Rangers a reliable offense surge.&#8220;George is really a special kid, a special runner,&#8221; Northwest coach Lon Hazlet said. &#8220;He was a little beat up last week. We tried to lighten his workload tonight.&#8220;We&#8217;re going to go as he goes.&#8221;Northwest went to 2-0 on the young season, following a last-minute upset of Lackawanna Trail in last week&#8217;s opener with a lopsided pounding of Holy Redeemer. Quarterback Ryan Wassel added touchdown runs of 18 and 15 yards, freshman Landon Hufford sprinted for a 58-yard touchdown for the game&#8217;s last score and Tyler Reakes returned a blocked field goal try for a 58-yard touchdown near the end of the first half.&#8220;Landon Hufford ripped off that big run, Jake Bobersky&#8217;s our starting fullback,&#8221; Hazlet said, praising two of the five freshman who were in Northwest&#8217;s starting lineup. &#8220;We&#8217;re just trying to mature slowly.&#8221;The maturation process for the Royals may take a little longer.Kelley stepped up to lead the program earlier this month when former coach Dwayne Downing stepped away, after taking a job that would limit his duties to coach the team. The Royals were held to 31 total yards in the first half and surrendered 201 as the Rangers roared to a five-touchdown lead.Redeemer, which had its opener postponed last week after Holy Cross folded its football program, scored its first points of the season when quarterback Colin Conway darted 11 yards and into the end zone with 5:10 remaining.By that time, the Rangers had victory well in hand.&#8220;We just play to the end,&#8221; May said. &#8220;We&#8217;re all go, no blow. We prepare hard every week.
