Downes finds daylight as King’s football team holds off McDaniel

WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Success won&#8217;t be measured solely by victories for Holy Redeemer this season, but by accomplishments.Case in point Saturday afternoon: Mahanoy Area 53, Redeemer 0 in a non-conference football game at Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium.The loss dropped Redeemer to 0-2 and extended its losing streak to 14 games, the longest in the Wyoming Valley Conference and District 2.&#8220;As far as getting better as a unit, I think were getting there slowly but surely,&#8221; Redeemer first-year coach Tyson Kelley said. &#8220;Days like today are tough, but it&#8217;s all about the big picture. Seeing where we want to be and where we&#8217;re at now.&#8221;Kelley was hired just before the start of official practice after coach Dwayne Downing stepped down due to a job change. He&#8217;s had a little over a month to get things in place.Meanwhile, Mahanoy Area (1-2) came in hungry for a victory and off a 50-0 drubbing at the hands of Tamaqua. The Golden Bears wasted little time pursuing their first win.Mahanoy Area&#8217;s option attack had Redeemer&#8217;s defense on its heels on the first drive. Quarterback Danny Lawrence, a two-year starter, ran the offense smoothly and ripped off runs of 17 and 34 yards before scoring on a 1-yard run less than two minutes into the game.Lawrence wasn&#8217;t done in the first quarter. He added TD runs of 39 and 68 yards in the first quarter as part of his 236-yard rushing game. Mahanoy Area went for two-point conversions after each score and converted all of them for a 24-0 lead going into the second quarter.Lawrence threw his only pass of the game on the next possession, connecting with Haydn Wall for a 19-yard touchdown. Running back Alexis Perez scored on runs of 3 and 5 yards to make it 46-0 at halftime.Mahanoy Area outgained Redeemer 277-4 in the first half. The Royals had better, albeit limited, success on offense in the final two quarters.Redeemer was able to put together a sustained drive at the end of the third quarter and extending into the fourth. A 29-yard pass from Colin Conway to Catal Ormando moved the ball to the Mahanoy Area 5-yard line. The drive ended with an interception on the next play.Things don&#8217;t get any easier for Redeemer in Week 4.
