WILKES-BARRE TWP. &#8211; Holding a three-point lead in the fourth quarter and looking for a spark after getting a turnover on the previous play, King&#8217;s College coach Jeff Knarr called a play for Jordan Downes, the team&#8217;s All-MAC running back, who led the league in rushing a year ago.The play nearly turned into disaster as Downes was bottled up on the left side of the offense and could have been tacked for a loss. Instead, the fifth-year senior broke through the congestion and reeled off a 53-yard touchdown run, leading the Monarchs to a 23-20 victory over Moravian on Saturday for the team&#8217;s second win in three years over the Greyhounds in a season-opening night game at McCarthy Stadium.&#8220;I was running and I just kinda used an instinct, like &#8216;Llet me look for something. I&#8217;m gonna have to bounce it out,&#8217; &#8221; Downes said. &#8220;And I saw a little hole they made for me, hit it as hard as I could and next thing I know, nobody was touching me.&#8221;Downes, who went for a game-high 154 yards on 21 carries, put the Monarchs in front 23-14 with that run, but it was the play of quarterback Tyler Moore, who was getting his first significant playing time, that stood out for King&#8217;s.The sophomore threw for 267 yards and two touchdowns, while completing 25 of 34 passes and started the game with seven straight completions.&#8220;He did spectacular. Tyler stepped up huge,&#8221; Downes said. &#8220;He did everything you could ask for and more. He played his butt off today. I&#8217;m really proud of him.&#8221;King&#8217;s (1-0) started the scoring on its first offensive play of the game when Moore connected with Gabe Boccella on a flea flicker from 65 yards out for a 7-0 lead just a minute into the game. That was a play that got Moore rolling with confidence.&#8220;When it&#8217;s his first throw and it goes for a touchdown, it&#8217;s huge,&#8221; Knarr said. &#8220;It helps take the pressure off. It gets them on their heels a little bit. That was a huge moment for him. You do that right there, it gives you a big shot of confidence.&#8221;Moravian drove to the King&#8217;s 5 on its next drive but the Monarchs forced a fumble and recovered, then went 88 yards on 16 plays for the second score of the contest. This time it was Moore finding Tim Costantino for a 7-yard score to put King&#8217;s in front 14-7 with 54 seconds left in the first quarter.Moravian broke up the shutout in the second quarter on a 33-yard TD strike from Chris Mills to Eddie Olsen to trim the lead to 14-7.The Greyhounds tied the game at 14-14 in the third quarter on Mills&#8217; second TD pass of the game.
