Hanover Area deals with high school case of whooping cough

DALLAS TWP. &#8212; Those players coming back from Coughlin to help form Wilkes-Barre&#8217;s new sports program know too well how difficult a duel with Dallas can be.And they weren&#8217;t about to get drawn into a defensive war that went down to the wire again.Jolene Ulichney and Abie Sorokas both scored twice Tuesday, Ali Tedik added two assists and the Wilkes-Barre Area Wolfpack hunted down the program&#8217;s first-ever field hockey win with a 6-0 domination of Dallas.&#8220;It was very exciting,&#8221; Ulichney said. &#8220;We wanted to get our first win as Wolfpack.&#8220;We played very good together.&#8221;The &#8216;Pack was on the attack from the start, as Hannah Chocallo slithered in for the first goal and Candladia Washinski followed with another less than two minutes later to give Wilkes-Barre Area a 2-0 lead little more than seven minutes into the game.That advantage doubled by halftime, when Sorakas and Ulichney scored goals midway through the opening half to send the Wolfpack into intermission with a 4-0 lead.&#8220;It&#8217;s exciting,&#8221; Sorakas said. &#8220;The team we&#8217;ve gotten together, I just really enjoy it.&#8221;This year&#8217;s sports teams from Meyers, GAR and Coughlin came together as one to play as Wilkes-Barre Area, with a new school already under construction and targeted to join students from all three city schools under one roof in the next two years.But Sorokas, Ulichney and many members of this year&#8217;s Wolfpack team also played in Coughlin&#8217;s last win, a dramatic 2-1 victory over Dallas in last year&#8217;s District 2 Class 2A semifinals that began on Oct. 26 and was completed on Oct. 29. That game went tied through two overtimes and came down to a shootout, which Coughlin won 3-2.&#8220;I remember everything about it,&#8221; Sorokas said. &#8220;It was an exciting game last year.&#8221;Instead of a heart-stopping finish, Wilkes-Barre Area was thrilled with a show-stopping start this time.By halftime Tuesday, Sorokas and Washinski each had a goal and an assist, and Tedik had both of her assists in a scoring surge that had Dallas on its heels.&#8220;Last year, we had a tough game with them,&#8221; Ulichney said. &#8220;We went overtime, it was a two-day game. We wanted to score first (Tuesday) so we could set the tone.&#8220;We wanted to come out strong first.&#8221;That tone didn&#8217;t change much during the second half, even as both goalies changed.After Briannah Lee stopped five shots for the Wolfpack in the first half, Olyvia Jackson replaced her for the game&#8217;s final 30 minutes and kept the shutout intact.And Ulichney&#8217;s second goal of the game, with 6:32 gone in the second half, sent Dallas to a switch in the cage and triggered a running clock under the sportsmanship rule with a five-goal lead for Wilkes-Barre Area.&#8220;I did pretty well just dribbling, looking up, seeing if I had any options,&#8221; said Ulichney, who was stopped shy of a hat trick only when Dallas goalie Amanda Puza turned away her penalty stroke late in the first half. &#8220;I had the shot, so I took it and it went in.&#8221;By the time Sorokas put in her second goal of the game, the Wolfpack were well on their way to celebrating the new team&#8217;s first win in its second game. Wilkes-Barre Area opened the regular Wyoming Valley Conference season with a 1-1 tie against Wyoming Area last Wednesday, then had its second scheduled game moved up more than a week.So in a coaching career that&#8217;s now spanning a third decade and included a boatload of big wins, Wilkes-Barre Area coach Colleen Wood smiled that this one seemed extra special.&#8220;I think just because it&#8217;s a whole new team,&#8221; Wood said. &#8220;First official win. It was good. It was nice.&#8220;Beautiful day.&#8221;Wyoming Valley West 8, Pittston Area 0Ariane Rupnick, Paige Williams, Chloe Pisack and Camryn Forgash all scored twice as the Spartans stormed to a 3-0 start to the WVC season and remained tied at the top of Division 1.Forgash had a hand in the game&#8217;s first three goals while dishing out a pair of assists and both goals by Rupnick came in the first half as Valley West built a quick 4-0 lead.Williams also finished with three assists.Lake-Lehman 8, Wallenpaupack 2Rachel Galasso scored two goals in the first half, Grace Ciaccia finished with two goals in the game and the Black Knights joined Wyoming Valley West and Wyoming Seminary at 3-0 on top of the WVC Division 1.Alana Antonello added a goal and two assists in just over 13 minutes of play to get Lehman going, Madison Lasinski had a goal and two assists over the first 23 minutes and Grace O&#8217;Donnell added two assists in the victory.Lackawanna Trail 6, Hanover Area 1Bella Jagoe had a hat trick, Belle Coleman scored twice and the Lions remained unbeaten in three games by beating the Hawkeyes Monday.Riley Corbett scored Hanover Area&#8217;s lone goal to tie the game at 1-1 nine minutes in.
