<p>There are times when we all need a reminder of the intrinsic good in our fellow human beings.</p><p>In all honesty, some days you won&#8217;t find that in the pages of your daily newspaper or on the evening newscast. Quite frankly, even those of us that work in the news media get overwhelmed by the constant stream of bad news.</p><p>But in the last few days there have been a couple stories from the world of sports that have shown us that there is still plenty of good in people.</p><p>The first comes from State College and Saturday night&#8217;s Penn State-Buffalo football game.</p><p>Buffalo&#8217;s punter, a sophomore college student named Evan Finegan, suffered a horrific injury.</p><p>He broke two bones in his leg. The injury was so disturbing that broadcasters refused to show replays of the play that Finegan was injured on.</p><p>But this is one of those silver lining in dark cloud stories. Finegan awoke from surgery in Happy Valley Sunday morning not knowing if he would ever play football again. Finegan also awoke to thousands upon thousands of well wishes on social media.</p><p>Most of those writing messages of support for Finegan not only didn&#8217;t know the punter personally, they weren&#8217;t even fans of his school&#8217;s team.</p><p>Penn State coach James Franklin and several Nittany Lion players visited Finegan in the hospital.</p><p>According to sports writer Derek Levarse&#8217;s story, Finegan wrote on Twitter, &#8220;Discharged from the hospital today! Excited to get back to Buffalo and see my guys! I am fortunate to be in such great hands not only at UB but also here at PSU. Thank you to the thousands of people that sent messages over the last few days. God is good!&#8221;</p><p>The second story comes from New York.</p><p>New York Mets rookie first baseman Pete Alonso has made quite the impact on the field this year, leading the major leagues in home runs, but he has shown his new home city has affected him more than just on the field.</p><p>Moved by living in a city that suffered so much through the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Alonso wanted to do something to honor the victims of that terrible day and their families.</p><p>Alonso coordinated the purchase and production of custom 9/11 cleats for Mets players to wear on the 18th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. The shoes were painted red, white and blue and included &#8220;We will never forget&#8221; and lettering for first responder units.</p><p>He paid for the shoes out of his own pocket.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not just the victims, it&#8217;s the scars left behind, like someone missing their mom or missing their dad,&#8221; Alonso said. &#8220;For me, I can&#8217;t imagine what that&#8217;s like. The toll isn&#8217;t necessarily all taken on that day, it&#8217;s progressively after because there&#8217;s not someone there in their family. It&#8217;s different from then on.&#8221;</p><p>Earlier in the year, Alonso donated a portion of the money he won for winning the home run derby at the Major League All-Star game to a charity for first responders.</p><p>So the next time the news of the day has you questioning whether there is any good left in your fellow man, just remember the unheralded football player from Buffalo and the slugging baseball player from New York.</p><p><em>&#8211; Times Leader</em></p><style>
