Osterhout gala raises more than $100K at annual gala

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Either would fit comfortably on the head of most hat pins &#8212; or for younger folks, would fit in the charging port of a smartphone.</p><p>Each rests in its own small round case, both on a gold tray atop the altar of the Chapel of Christ the King Friday.</p><p>They are bone fragments from two holy men central to King&#8217;s College: St. Andre Bessette and Blessed Basil Moreau, and the relics were put on display during a service Friday afternoon that was the penultimate use of a chapel dating back to 1984.</p><p>Friday&#8217;s service was not a Mass, but rather a celebration of songs and readings, with the Rev. Jarrod Waugh, King&#8217;s associate campus minister, reflecting on the meaning and history of a chapel poised to close. A procession Sunday afternoon from the current chapel to the new one in the former Memorial Presbyterian Church on North Street will complete the transition.</p><p>Moreau is the founder of the Congregation of the Holy Cross, the Roman Catholic religious order that founded King&#8217;s. Bessette is the first saint from the order, canonized in 2010. Along with the relics, portraits of both stood upright on the altar for all to see.</p><p>The Rev. Thomas Looney, director of campus ministry, presided, opening with comments about the numerous Masses and ceremonies held in the chapel, including weddings, baptisms and funerals. Looney himself took his final vows in the chapel.</p><p>The 30-strong choir garbed in black robes with red and gold trim sang appropriate songs including &#8220;This is Holy Ground,&#8221; &#8220;The Church&#8217;s One Foundation&#8221; and &#8220;How Lovely is Your Dwelling Place.&#8221; The readings similarly reflected the transition underway, with passages about making a church of &#8220;living stone.&#8221;</p><p>In the end, Looney and Waugh walked out, leaving the relics on display for any to see until 7 p.m. Most of the crowd lined up for a look at the rarely displayed religious artifacts, which will be placed in the new chapel.</p><p>Asked if he&#8217;ll miss the chapel where he has served for 35 years, Looney&#8217;s answer was obvious in his face even before he said the words.</p><p>&#8220;Of course I will.&#8221;</p><style>
