Job seekers on the hunt at Times Leader Career Fair

WILKES-BARRE &#8212; With just over 10 minutes left in Tuesday night&#8217;s Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 boys soccer match between Dallas and Wilkes-Barre Area, the Mountaineers&#8217; Zach Holthaus &#8211; one of the top players in the league &#8211; lined up for a penalty kick during a tie game with Dallas holding momentum.But Wolfpack keeper Joel Vazquez stuffed the shot as they stole momentum and got the game-winning goal from Tanner Nilon with 1:00 left to defeat the Mountaineers 2-1 at an electric Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium in a match with a thrilling finish.&#8220;That&#8217;s a huge save. I questioned the call, but it was a huge save by Joel,&#8221; WBA coach Jack Nolan said. &#8220;Zach slotted it and put it where he needed to, but Joel guessed right and it was a big momentum switch for us.&#8221;The last 10 minutes of the match were action-packed, starting with the officials calling a tripping play in the box to set up the Holthaus PK. Vazquez, a senior, who has grown up with the Mountaineers standout and played against him before, picked the right side to make the save, but also saw a little clue in the delivery.&#8220;I&#8217;m thinking just pick a side and react to it,&#8221; Vazquez said. &#8220;He&#8217;s a great player. I guess I got lucky. At first I was thinking he was gonna go to the other side but then he opened his hip a little bit and I thought, &#8216;Now he&#8217;s gonna go this side.&#8217; So I just went for it.&#8221;About five minutes after the save by Vazquez, Nilon took a free kick from about 20 yards out. The shot was denied by Dallas keeper Derek Gordon, who punched the ball over the crossbar to keep the game tied.With time winding down and Dallas controlling the ball, Nilon wasn&#8217;t discouraged from missing the previous free kick. He broke through the Dallas defense and past two defenders before beating Gordon for the game-winning tally with 1:00 remaining.&#8220;Tanner&#8217;s a special player. He plays club ball. He plays all the time,&#8221; Nolan said. &#8220;We know what he can do. He knows what he can do.&#8221;Dallas, which uncharacteristically fell to 0-2 in the division and 0-4 overall, held the upper hand in shots (14-10) and corner kicks (8-4). The Mountaineers had trouble finishing, but the WBA defense also made some key stops as Dallas had four corner kicks in the final 10 minutes of play.&#8220;We played a lot of good defense,&#8221; Nolan said. &#8220;They had (four) corners in a row and didn&#8217;t get anything through. It was a hectic finish. They outplayed us a little bit at times, but I thought we did a good job of regrouping.&#8221;The Mountaineers opened a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal from Dylan Roberts from about 30 yards out off a pass from Jake Hockenberry with 10:33 left on the clock. They held the lead until after the midway point of the second half.That&#8217;s when a flurry in front of the goal resulted in the ball hitting the back of the net. At first, it appeared it was an own goal from Dallas, but turns out it was Nilon who got a piece of it to get credited with the tally to tie the game at 1-1 with 18:24 to go.The Wolfpack, who improved to 2-1 in the division and 5-2 overall, continue a tough stretch to start their season by visiting unbeaten Wyoming Valley West (3-0-1 overall) on Thursday evening.&#8220;To start the season we had Crestwood, Hazleton, Dallas and Valley West. We knew they were the four best teams in the league,&#8221; Nolan said. &#8220;We thought we were there with them. And after losing the heartbreaker to Crestwood, this was a big win for us to come back and win this one.&#8221;Dallas, which has lost its three conference games by one goal each, now will play another Class 4A school in Hazleton Area (0-1 Division 1) on Thursday.Hazleton Area 3, Pittston Area 1Gabe Fabian scored two second half goals to lead Hazleton Area past Pittston Area.Luke Daveler scored in the first half for the Cougars.
