Wilkes-Barre man pleads guilty to possessing counterfeit cash

<p>SCRANTON &#8212; A Tunkhannock man was arrested after a woman claimed he raped her along the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail in Scranton and again in Exeter early Sunday morning.</p><p>Scranton police in a news release said Aaron Phillip Sherman, 25, was arrested Monday on charges of rape, aggravated indecent assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated assault, simple assault, kidnapping and false imprisonment.</p><p>A woman told police she was walking across the West Elm Street Bridge on her way to work at about 2:30 a.m. when she was approached from behind and struck in the head, and then grabbed around the neck and dragged to a wooded area near the heritage trail, the news release says.</p><p>Court records filed against Sherman say the woman&#8217;s hands were bound with tape and was forced to perform an oral sex act before he raped her.</p><p>Sherman forced the woman into his truck and drove around for several hours. She remembered seeing a sign for Exeter where she told police Sherman raped her again, court records say.</p><p>During the drive, Sherman talked to the woman who made up a story about living on Capouse Avenue in Scranton. When she mentioned the avenue, Sherman told her his family owns several boarding houses in the area.</p><p>Sherman threatened to kill the woman if she called police and dropped her off at Walmart in Pittston Township, where she managed to obtained a partial license plate.</p><p>Scranton police detectives recovered tape from the heritage trail where the woman said she was raped. Detectives also encountered Sherman loading items into the truck that had the same digits on the license plate the woman was able to partially obtain, court records say.</p><p>Court records say Sherman admitted he drove around looking for a woman with intentions to rape her while carrying a pipe and tape.</p><p>The woman was treated at Regional Hospital in Scranton. </p><p>Sherman was arraigned by District Judge Laura M. Turlip and jailed at the Lackawanna County Prison for lack of $1 million bail.</p><style>
