Eagles turn to run game for big victory

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; The region&#8217;s labor community will celebrate several milestones during a gathering Saturday evening at the Best Western Plus Genetti&#8217;s Hotel and Conference Center.</p><p>The event will mark the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Greater Wilkes-Barre Labor Council (GWBCL), which was then called the Wilkes-Barre Central Labor Union, and the 120th year of the founding of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Building and Construction Trades Council.</p><p>The GWBLC has 60 affiliated labor organizations while the Northeastern Building and Construction Trades Council has 15 affiliated unions.</p><p>The event also will commemorate the 90th anniversary of the death of United States Congressman John Casey, the famous &#8220;breaker boy congressman,&#8221; who helped organize the GWBLC. He is buried in St. Mary&#8217;s Cemetery, Hanover Township.</p><p>More than 425 tickets have been purchased for the event said Joe Padavan, president of the GWBLC and of the United Steelworkers Union Local 15253 in Wilkes-Barre. Cocktails will begin at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and the program.</p><p>At the dinner, the GWBLC will acknowledge and pay tribute to longtime federation President Sam Bianco, who died on Sept. 28, 2011. The dinner will be the first for the GWBLC since Bianco&#8217;s passing.</p><p>The GWBLC is affiliated with the American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) and the Building and Construction Trades Council is a chapter of the labor federation.</p><p>&#8220;We are excited that organized labor and our friends are coming together to celebrate the anniversaries. We will have a large turnout,&#8221; Padavan said.</p><style>
