<p>HAZLETON &#8212; A New York City man wanted for the alleged machete slaying of his wife earlier this month was captured in Hazleton late Thursday night.</p><p>Police Chief Jerry Speziale said Victor Mateo, 63, of Yonkers, was apprehended during a traffic stop in the 100 block of West Tamarack Street at about 10:10 p.m.</p><p>Published reports in New York City say Mateo killed his wife, Noelia Mateo, in Throgs Neck of the Bronx on Oct. 3. Mateo ran over his wife with a vehicle, got out and struck her multiple times with a machete, according to published reports.</p><p>U.S. Marshal Regional Task Force gathered intelligence indicating Mateo had family in the Hazleton area and owned rental properties.</p><p>Through coordinated efforts with city police and state police, surveillance was established on Mateo&#8217;s property on Tamarack Street.</p><p>Just after 10 p.m., police Det. Lt. Anthony White, Det. Sgt. Kevin Wagner and Det. Angelo Gadola spotted a 2013 Hyundai Tucson driven by Mateo arrive on Tamarack Street.</p><p>Additional police units responded and conducted a traffic stop when Mateo was taken into custody, Speziale stated.</p><p>&#8220;The men and women of the Hazleton Police Department are a talented group of individuals truly dedicated to the safety of our city,&#8221; stated Hazleton Mayor Jeff Cusat. &#8220;I am proud of the hard work displayed daily by the men and women of the Hazleton Police Department.&#8221;</p><p>Mateo was arraigned Friday by District Judge Michael Dotzel in Wilkes-Barre Township as a fugitive from justice. He was jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility without bail.</p><p>An extradition hearing is scheduled on Oct. 18 before county Judge Michael T. Vough.</p><style>

NY homicide suspect captured in Hazleton
