High School Volleyball: Berwick moves to brink of first WVC girls volleyball title

Holy Redeemer, Hazleton Area and Crestwood all left the Wyoming County Fairgrounds with multiple titles from Thursday&#8217;s Ed Narkiewicz Wyoming Valley Conference Cross Country Coaches Championship Meet.Chris Hine began the day by winning the varsity boys title for Holy Redeemer.The Royals won the team championships in varsity girls and junior high boys.Hazleton Area won the varsity boys team championship of the meet and won three make-up dual meets that were scored from results of the conference meet. Those victories allowed the Cougars to win the conference regular-season title by improving to 15-1, matching the record of Holy Redeemer, which they beat earlier in the season.Crestwood accounted for three of the four individual titles.Sophomore Molly DeMarzo repeated as varsity girls champion.Comets runners Weston Medvetz and Ella Novelli won the junior high titles.The other championship decided Thursday was the team title claimed by Dallas in junior high girls.Holy Redeemer had already won the varsity girls conference title by going 16-0 during the regular-season schedule.The day started with varsity boys.Hine completed the 3.1-mile course in 16:47 to win by 17 seconds over Hazleton Area&#8217;s Zack Keiner.Keiner was followed to the finish by teammate Gabriel McKittrick and Nichalas Hebel gave the Cougars three of the top six finishers in the 158-runner field.Hazleton Area beat out Holy Redeemer, 59-82, for the team title.The Cougars also defeated Wyoming Area, 22-36, and both Dallas and Wyoming Seminary by 17-44 scores to finish the 15-1 WVC season.DeMarzo and Lake-Lehman&#8217;s Abby Paczewski repeated their 1-2 finish from a year ago. DeMarzo again won comfortably while lowering her team 45 seconds to 19:07.Paczewski joined her in breaking 20 minutes and lowered her time by 30 seconds.Holy Redeemer ran away with the team title, 27-61, over Hazleton Area.Senior Cameron Marcinkowski posted her second straight top-five finish, placing third to lead Holy Redeemer.
