PSU weekend review: Harbaugh’s officiating gripes don’t sit well with Franklin

It&#8217;s tough to see any game time as a true freshman in college football &#8212; and then it&#8217;s usually on special teams at best.Anthony Cicini has taken it to the next level.The 5-foot-9, 180-pounder has started all six games for the Dickinson football team, the first five games as a free safety and then as a strong safety in a 34-0 shutout of McDaniel in a Centennial Conference game last Saturday in Carlisle.Cicini, a Berwick grad, is fifth on the team in tackles with 30 and has 18 solos. He also has two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, an interception and a pass breakup. He had 12 tackles, nine unassisted, in his first collegiate game, a 26-14 non-league victory over Washington &amp; Lee on Sept. 7.&#8220;Anthony brings a very physical style of play to our defense,&#8221; Red Devils coach Brad Fordyce said. &#8220;He is a disruptive tackler from his safety position and always plays with an edge.&#8221;Fordyce feels that Cicini has progressed well over the course of the season and has done a tremendous job over overcoming an injury from last year.&#8220;Anthony has gotten better in every game,&#8221; Fordyce said. &#8220;He brings versatility to the secondary and he is proficient in coverage. And, he&#8217;s an explosive blitzer.&#8221;The Red Devils are 3-3 overall and 2-3 in league play after the victory over McDaniel.Brigid Wood (Boston College)The senior has started all 15 games for the field hockey team and has three goals and two assists. The Coughlin graduate has two game winners, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 triumph over No. 13 Harvard on Oct. 10 and the first goal in a 2-0 ACC victory over Wake Forest on Sept. 20.The Eagles are 10-5 overall and 3-1 in league play after a 2-0 non-league shutout of New Hampshire Sunday in Durham, N.H.LJ Wesneski (Albany)The 6-foot-3, 260-pound tight end caught two passes and both went for touchdowns to help the football team get by Rhode Island 35-28 in a Colonial Athletic Conference test Saturday. The Wyoming Valley West graduate had scoring catches of 14 and 13 yards.He has caught nine passes for 124 yards (13.8 per reception) and six of them have gone for touchdowns. The Great Danes are 5-3 overall and 3-1 in CAA play.Katie Supey (Lock Haven)The senior scored her first goal of the season and it was a game-winner as the field hockey team blanked Wagner 4-0 in a non-league game Saturday. The Lake-Lehman graduate has played in 14 games with three starts for the Bald Eagles who are 8-7 overall and 4-2 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.Supey had three goals and an assist last season. An early childhood education major, she was also named to the National field Hockey Coaches Association Division I National Academic team.Lexi Conklin (Neumann)The 5-foot-3 sophomore midfielder has played in all 15 games with 14 starts for the field hockey team, the Knights 5-8-2 overall and 1-2-1 in Atlantic East Conference play after a 4-0 league victory over Gwynedd Mercy last Saturday. The Lake-Lehman graduate scored a goal in a 2-0 victory over Penn State Altoona on Aug. 31.Sophomore Amanda Ayers, also a Lake-Lehman alum, has played in 14 games with five starts and scored her only goal of the season against Gwynedd Mercy.Mason Kimbell (Salisbury)The junior finished fifth out of 148 runners and helped the men&#8217;s cross country team finish second in a field of 15 at the Hood College Open on Saturday in Frederick, Md. The Berwick grad covered the 8,000-meter course in 26:37.5.Kimbell posted a personal record time of 25:58.4 for 8k when he finished eighth out of 146 runners at the Sea Hawks&#8217; 31st annual Don Cathcart Invitational on Oct. 5.Mia Bellucci (Bucknell)The freshman finished seventh out of 41 runners for the women&#8217;s cross country team at the Leopard Invitational last Saturday in Easton. She covered the 6,00- meter course in 23:39.7 to help the Bison finish second out of five teams.Bellucci, from Pittston and a Scranton Prep graduate, finished 165th out of 370 runners in the Brown Division race at the annual Paul Short Run on Oct. 5 in Bethlehem. She recorded a personal best in the 6k with a time of 23:04.3.Alee Pettit (Susquehanna)The senior midfielder has started all 15 games for the field hockey team, the River Hawks 11-3-1 overall and 4-1-0 in the Landmark Conference after a 3-0 league victory over Goucher on Saturday in Selinsgrove.The Wyoming Area grad has a goal and a team-high five assists and the goal was a game winner in a 3-0 triumph over King&#8217;s on Sept. 18. Last season, Pettit made 17 starts and had two goals and two assists with a game winner.Kalie Reed (Slippery Rock)The senior defensive midfielder has started all 14 games for the field hockey team. The Coughlin graduate has picked up two defensive saves and has taken three shots on goal.An economics major, Reed has been named to the PSAC Scholar list the past two seasons and was a National Field Hockey Coaches Association National Academic selection as a freshman.Mikaila Chakon (Mansfield)The 5-foot-4 junior midfielder has started all 14 games for the field hockey team, the Mounties 10-4 overall and 4-2 in the PSAC and three of the team&#8217;s losses were to nationally ranked teams including to No. 2 East Stroudsburg 6-1 on Saturday.The Dallas graduate has a goal and an assist, the goal coming in a 3-1 non-league triumph over Longwood on Sept. 28. Chakon has helped the defense limit foes to 15 goals (1.05 goals against average) with six shutouts.Abby Connors (DeSales)The freshman wrapped up the fall season with a big effort for the women&#8217;s tennis team in a 9-0 victory over Penn State Berks on Oct. 4. The Pittston Area graduate won her No. 4 singles match 6-1, 6-2 and teamed with junior Alex Rodier to take No. 3 doubles 8-0.Connors finished the fall season with a 2-4 mark in singles, 1-3 in dual matches &#8211; all at No. 4 &#8212; and 3-1 at No. 3 doubles with Rodier.<style>
