Luzerne County Council race sees 11 vie for six seats

<p>LEHMAN TWP . &#8212; When runners approached the registration table of a 5K race aimed at raising money to fight pediatric cancer on Saturday morning, organizers asked a seemingly unusual question.</p><p>&#8220;Do you need zombie repellent?&#8221;</p><p>Jackie Warnick-Piatt, director of student activities at Penn State Wilkes-Barre, was asking the question of 5K participants, in an effort to prepare them for the event&#8217;s zombie theme &#8212; which would mean that the would be approached several times by the undead as they made their way along the route.</p><p>For the record, that repellent was silly string.</p><p>The Zombie Run/Walk in its sixth year, raises money for Penn State University&#8217;s THON, a student run effort that will culminate with a three-day dance marathon in late February at the university&#8217;s Main Campus.</p><p>To Erin Brennan, an assistant professor at the campus, the event was also an opportunity to thoroughly enjoy an autumn day outdoors.</p><p>Brennan described herself as a casual runner, but thought the unique nature of the event might mean she would run faster.</p><p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t know, I&#8217;ve never been chased by a zombie,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Maybe it will improve my time.&#8221;</p><p>Sophomore Kaitlyn Kozick, primary THON chairperson for the campus, said she was inspired to participate because she had participated in a mini-THON in high school.</p><p>Kozick said she had not designated any specific &#8220;zombie apparel,&#8221; but instead told students to come dressed in what they thought was &#8220;zombie appropriate.&#8221;</p><p>When they got to the event, they were assisted with makeup, which included a lot of red representing blood.</p><p>The event is one of many at the campus which will raise money for THON, which will include a &#8220;pasta THON,&#8221; penny wars, raffling off of a Nittany Lion statue and receipt of donations.</p><p>On Feb. 21, local campuses will conclude their own fundraising efforts and representatives from each campus will head to State College to participate in the three day event.</p><p>The Wilkes-Barre campus will be sending two representatives to participate in the dance-a-thon. Other student representatives from the campus will also attend the February event.</p><p>Cara Green, Director of Development, whose husband Mike was running the 5K, looked on with her son Anderson, who is five months old.</p><p>Green said the event was a great opportunity to enjoy the campus during the peak of the autumn season.</p><p>As about ten runners completed the three-and-a-half mile run, they ran through red tape appropriately labelled &#8220;danger.&#8221;</p><p>The Wilkes-Barre campus of Penn State and others like it across the state, will now be putting their fund raising efforts into high gear to raise money for THON, utilizing a spirit of both creativity and generosity which historically draws thousands of participants to University Park, to support the student-led effort.</p><p>The Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, affectionately known as THON, is the largest student run philanthropy in the world. THON, a yearlong effort to raise funds and awareness for the fight against pediatric cancer, has raised more than $150 million for Four Diamonds at Penn State Hershey Children&#8217;s Hospital since 1977.</p><p>THON 2020 will take place from Feb. 21 through 23, 2020 at Penn State&#8217;s main campus.</p><style>
