H.S. Football: Regular-season results mean little come District 2 playoff time

<p>COVINGTON TWP. &#8211; The MMI Prep and Blue Ridge girls volleyball teams are developing a routine.</p><p>Late each October, MMI Prep travels to Blue Ridge, which hosts the District 2 Class A semifinal doubleheader as the top seed. They both win and get together soon after at North Pocono to determine the champion.</p><p>The last part of that routine is what MMI Prep will look to change one of these days.</p><p>Blue Ridge won its sixth straight title Thursday night. For the fifth straight year, MMI Prep was the opponent, settling for second in the district.</p><p>MMI Prep won the first set for the third straight season, but once again, Holy Redeemer took the next three, claiming the championship, 21-25, 25-17, 25-10, 25-23.</p><p>&#8220;We work hard every year to get back to this point,&#8221; MMI Prep coach Shawn Evans said.</p><p>It took a little extra work this year when the team faced a series of injuries while already facing its usual challenge of playing schools from larger enrollment classifications in every Wyoming Valley Conference match.</p><p>&#8220;You name it, we faced it,&#8221; Evans said. &#8220;We still persevered and got back to this level.&#8221;</p><p>The annual trips to Blue Ridge, situated outside New Milford, just miles from the New York State border, have led to a familiarity &#8211; and friendliness &#8211; between the two programs.</p><p>&#8220;They always impress us every year,&#8221; Evans said.</p><p>Blue Ridge coach Lori Zick knew the Preppers were not the type of team to give up after Blue Ridge won 24 of 31 points at one stage while pulling out the second set and taking a commanding lead in the third set.</p><p>&#8220;They keep coming back,&#8221; Zick said. &#8220;They never give up.&#8221;</p><p>Julie Amentler had 11 kills, 10 service points, an ace and a block for MMI Prep, which finished 9-11. Her sister, Kim Amentler, had nine kills, 13 points and seven digs.</p><p>Andreillie Puntiel, one of just two seniors on MMI&#8217;s team, had eight points and three blocks.</p><p>Jackie Snyder had 12 assists, 10 points, two kills and an ace. Alex Young had 10 assists and two digs.</p><p>Hunter Heeman led Blue Ridge with 16 kills. Alyssa Sherwood added 12 kills, four aces and two blocks.</p><style>
