<p>SWOYERSVILLE &#8212; It started out as a little bit of a joke, really.</p><p>On the night before Halloween, borough Mayor Chris Concert invited the media to resident Dave Resavage&#8217;s front yard, elaborately decorated for the spooky holiday as it has been each October for 38 years.</p><p>Resavage thought Concert simply wanted to use his Halloween spectacular as a backdrop for the announcement of a canned food drive.</p><p>In fact, that was how Concert tricked Resavage into showing up for an elaborate surprise: presentation of the Mayor&#8217;s Swoyersville Spirit Award.</p><p>That said, Concert was serious about the food drive.</p><p>So was the community.</p><p>The mayor&#8217;s appeal, which ran through Saturday, brought in 3,000 cans of food, Concert told The Times Leader.</p><p>Concert said he recently came up with the idea after being reminded of the many needy families who were without enough food as the winter approached.</p><p>&#8220;Whenever there is a need in this valley, people always come through,&#8221; he said.</p><p>And come they did, not just from Swoyersville, mind you.</p><p>&#8220;We had people from the Back Mountain, Harveys Lake, Pringle, really, they came from all over,&#8221; the mayor added.</p><p>The donations are diverse, too, from mixed vegetables to baby food.</p><p>Concert said much of what was donated will be taken to Volunteers of America for its food pantry, but some also will go to local churches.</p><p>Already, however, he has made another distribution &#8212; to a family whose needs were brought to the mayor&#8217;s attention.</p><p>That&#8217;s not all Concert is doing to help out as winter approaches.</p><p>Mindful of the coming of colder temperatures, Concert has been gathering hats, gloves and scarves for people in need. Many hats, mittens and gloves were donated by River Run Rehab and Nursing Center in Kingston, while borough resident Patricia Wojnarski has knitted colorful hats for the effort.</p><p>Concert noted that he also has knitted &#8220;chemo hats&#8221; available for people undergoing chemotherapy.</p><p>Anyone who is in need of these winter goods can contact the mayor for information, at 570-239-4124.</p><p>&#8220;I just can&#8217;t thank everyone enough,&#8221; Concert said of donors.</p><style>
