Stakeholders, state officials discuss impact of closing SCI-Retreat

WILKES-BARRE TWP. &#8212; The sound of a puck clanging off a post or crossbar behind him can mean different things for a hockey goalie.It was a sweet sound for Casey DeSmith Wednesday night.The posts got the only three Hershey Bears shots that Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins goalie did not stop himself as DeSmith ran his scoreless streak to more than 184 minutes in a 1-0 shootout victory.&#8220;I guess it depends on everyone else&#8217;s reaction,&#8221; DeSmith said. &#8220;When I hear it hit the boards, I smile. If I see some guys raise their hands, I get kind of upset.&#8221;The posts were no factor in the 28 shots DeSmith stopped during regulation and overtime or in two of the three times Hershey failed to convert in the three-round shootout.DeSmith held his ground so well on Mike Sgarbossa&#8217;s second attempt of the shootout that all that was left was a shot that slid softly to the post and bounced back a few inches harmlessly.There was a little more sound on the shots had caromed away with 40 seconds left in the second period and 3:15 remaining in regulation.&#8220;The team is playing great team defense,&#8221; DeSmith said. &#8220;We&#8217;re getting pucks deep. We&#8217;re forechecking. We&#8217;re doing all the little things right.&#8220;We did a good job staying out of the box after the first period. And, we&#8217;re getting some puck luck.&#8221;The Penguins (8-5-1-1) have not needed much of that luck while allowing just one goal in a three-game winning streak that has moved them up to third place in the eight-team Atlantic Division.They also are not needing many goals.The only score of any type Wednesday was when Stefan Noesen connected in the shootout following 65 minutes of scoreless hockey.The Penguins &#8211; and Noesen &#8211; went first.Noesen wound up on a slap shot as the coasted through the slot, sending the puck just inside the right post for what wound up being the game&#8217;s decisive shot.&#8220;Sometimes games are going to be high-flying and there&#8217;s going to be a lot of scoring so you have to find ways to score goals,&#8221; Noesen said. &#8220;Sometimes, they&#8217;re going to be tight-knit games just like the past three.&#8220;You find ways to win.&#8221;Head coach and general manager Mike Vellucci has been pleased with his team&#8217;s ability to find those ways.&#8220;Offensively, I thought we&#8217;d score a few more goals,&#8221; Vellucci said, &#8220;but again, it&#8217;s finding a way to win the game.&#8220;If you&#8217;re not scoring, you better not give them up.&#8221;With the help of an early power play, the Penguins took the game&#8217;s first six shots and had a 14-5 lead in shots after one period. Hershey had a shot advantage of 23-15 the rest of the way.Bears goalie Pheonix Copley made 29 saves and was the third star.DeSmith and Noesen were the first and second stars.The game, which marked the 20th anniversary of the team&#8217;s first home game, was the second straight at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Former Penguins Dennis Bonvie and Chris Kelleher joined original arena authority chairman Kevin Blaum in a ceremony before the game.Wednesday&#8217;s game also started a stretch of three home games in four nights.
