<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8211; The course for the inaugural Wilkes-Barre Half Marathon is set, and there is some good news for first timers &#8211; the course is relatively flat.</p><p>&#8220;I think it will be an ideal course for beginners,&#8221; said Candice Dutko, who is organizing the event. &#8220;It only has 318 feet of elevation.&#8221;</p><p>The City of Wilkes-Barre recently approved the course and is now coordinating appropriate street closures for the race, which will be held July 19 with a 7 a.m. starting time.</p><p>The race will start on East Market Street in front of City Hall and finish on Public Square. In between the two, runners will get to see and run through plenty of the 7.1-square-mile city.</p><p>Runners will head up East Market Street to Wilkes-Barre Boulevard. Once on Wilkes-Barre Boulevard, the runners will head toward George Avenue where they will turn right to get to Scott Street.</p><p>The runners will take Scott Street to East Main, then take East Main to North Washington and then to North Pennsylvania Avenue to head back to the city&#8217;s downtown.</p><p>Once downtown, the runners will take North Street to River Street, which will take the runners into South Wilkes-Barre and to South Franklin Street. Then it&#8217;s back to the downtown to take Union Street to Wilkes-Barre Boulevard and a loop around Horton and Hanover Streets back in South Wilkes-Barre before racing up South Main Street to a Public Square finish.</p><p>Dutko&#8217;s plan is to alternate the course each year, but she feels she has picked a fine one for the first Wilkes-Barre Half Marathon.</p><p>She&#8217;s walked the course once already and measured it in her truck. She hopes to get a more exact measurement of what the competitors of the half marathon will actually run by riding the course on her back soon.</p><p>She also noted that the race will have a four-hour cutoff time, which she believes is more than enough time for even a newbie to complete the course.</p><p>&#8220;I always say, it&#8217;s your four hours, so do with it what you want,&#8221; she said, suggesting some competitors may want to walk portions of the course.</p><p>Registration for the event opens on Jan. 1, with the registration fee starting at $65.</p><p>Sponsorship opportunities for the race are still available. Dutko said businesses along the route may want to consider sponsoring aid stations, which she plans to have at each mile.</p><p>The Times Leader is the print media sponsor of the Wilkes-Barre Half Marathon.</p><style>
