Kyle Busch leads Gibbs trio to win 2nd NASCAR championship

<p>KINGSTON &#8212; One last time, Hannah Maxwell found her way to the cage in a stadium she knew so well.</p><p>The best part, though?</p><p>She had some old friends to help her.</p><p>Maxwell put the finishing touches on a fabulous weekend for her and her Wyoming Seminary teammates by scoring two goals and assisting on three others Sunday, leading the West to a dominating 10-1 victory over the East in the third annual Distrit 2 Field Hockey Senior Classic at Wyoming Valley West&#8217;s Spartan Stadium.</p><p>&#8220;This is where it all started,&#8221; said Maxwell, who grew up playing in the Valley West school district before enrolling at Sem, where she helped the Blue Knights to back-to-back PIAA Class A titles and finishing with a 1-0 double-overtime victory over Oley Valley in Saturday&#8217;s state title game. &#8220;Playing in the Senior All-Star Game, pretty much with all the girls I&#8217;ve grown up playing with, it was pretty special.&#8221;</p><p>Making it even more special, the game&#8217;s proceeds were donated to the American Heart Associated in the name of Bob Sorokas &#8212; the father of Wilkes-Barre Area Senior Abie Sorokas &#8212; after the man known as &#8220;Coach Bob&#8221; passed away from heart disease in mid-September.</p><p>Maybe as a tribute, Abie Sorokas assisted on the only goal for the East.</p><p>As for Maxwell&#8217;s goals, there was Valley West&#8217;s Class 2A state champion Rina Tsioles out of her past and Sem teammate Alex Wesneski from the present feeding her assists &#8212; a fitting, final tribute to the two state championship schools who earned and returned to Kingston with PIAA gold medals less than 24 hours before the start of Sunday&#8217;s game.</p><p>&#8220;I think we were all happy for each other, representing the Wyoming Valley Conference,&#8221; said Maxwell, noting that Sem&#8217;s Upper School and Valley West&#8217;s grade schools are both located in Kingston. &#8220;It&#8217;s special to have kids from schools in the same town and both win state championships.</p><p>&#8220;That&#8217;s something you don&#8217;t see every day.&#8221;</p><p>Here are some things Wyoming Valley Conference fans do.</p><p>Tsioles, Valley West&#8217;s 4-foot-11 sparkplug and lighting bug of a midfielder who&#8217;s headed to play at Old Dominion next year, celebrated her final run at Spartan Stadium by whipping three assists to three different players. She started by finding the Wake Forest-bound Maxwell for a score, then dished another out to Wyoming Area&#8217;s Kari Melberger, then hit Shaelyn Kobrynich of Abington Heights for goals in a stretch of 18 minutes that took the West&#8217;s lead from 3-1 to 8-1.</p><p>Before she heads back home to Germany, Valley West transfer student Ari Rupnik got another goal and registered an assist in her final foray at Spartan Stadium. The natural defender-turned-forward scored a goal in all six postseason games for Valley West and hit the team&#8217;s first goal in four of them, including the game-tying score that sparked the Spartans to a 2-1 victory over Palmyra in Saturday&#8217;s PIAA Class 2A title game.</p><p>So it wasn&#8217;t a big surprise to see her score the first goal of the Senior Classic, which gave the West a lead less than two minutes into the action.</p><p>Iowa commit Wesneski, who joined Maxwell as a 100-goal scorer through her spectacular Sem career this year, finished with a hat trick.</p><p>Caton Fahey of Holy Redeemer scored the only goal for the East off a feed from Wilkes-Barre Area point producer Abie Sorokas, tying the game with 10:43 to play in the opening quarter. Dallas&#8217; Madison Pertl scored twice and Kobrynich added a goal and an assist.</p><p>And before the first half ended, Wesneski set up Maxwell for a goal that in a combination that seems to keep playing on a loop on the team&#8217;s highlight reels over the past two years.</p><p>In other words, we&#8217;ve seen that connection convert over and over before.</p><p>&#8220;There was definitely some teamwork,&#8221; Maxwell winked.</p><p>It may have come full circle for Maxwell, who ended the first half with a goal off that pass from Wesneski for a 3-1 West lead, then started the second half scoring by taking an assist from Tsioles and planting a reverse chip into the cage to boost that advantage to 4-1.</p><p>&#8220;I started playing with Rina in third grade,&#8221; Maxwell said. &#8220;We&#8217;ve all been playing together. Me and Rina have been play club (hockey) together since we were three feet tall. It was fun to play a high school game with her again.&#8221;</p><p>They came together again, as Wesneski, Maxwell and Tsioles started the game for the West on the forward line.</p><p>&#8220;I just put them in a group out there and said, &#8216;Go into whatever positions you want,&#8217; &#8221; said Berwick coach Amy Daniel, who coached the West to the win. &#8220;No, I didn&#8217;t do a lot of coaching.&#8221;</p><p>With players from two state champions, she didn&#8217;t have to.</p><p>But Wesneski and Maxwell just had to leave their mark together, one final time.</p><p>With 12 seconds to play, Maxwell fed Wesneski for a goal that put a stamp on a big weekend for them, along with two state championship schools and all the seniors from District 2.</p><p>&#8220;Before the game, we actually said, &#8216;This is for fun,&#8217; &#8221; Maxwell said. &#8220;Then Amy (Daniel) said, &#8216;Good, but we&#8217;re going to win.&#8217; Alex and I looked at each other and said, &#8216;Of course.&#8217;</p><p>&#8220;Winning is the only option.&#8221;</p><p style="text-align: center;"><strong>DISTRICT 2 FIELD HOCKEY</strong></p><p style="text-align: center;"><strong>SENIOR CLASSIC</strong></p><p style="text-align: center;"><strong>West 10, East 1</strong></p><p style="text-align: left;"><strong>East`1`0 &#8212; 1</strong></p><p style="text-align: left;"><strong>West`3`7 &#8212; 10</strong></p><p style="text-align: left;"><strong>First quarter &#8212; </strong>1.
