Pro-democracy camp wins landslide in Hong Kong vote

<p>A Thanksgiving Day tradition that has faded into memory were high school gridiron games, rival teams playing their last games of the season and at times for the conference championship.</p><p>In 1951, there were 12 games scheduled on Thanksgiving Day that fell on Nov. 22 with six games scheduled to start at 10 a.m.</p><p>Thousands of spectators would attend the gridiron games with adults paying 65 cents and students 30 cents to enter stadiums.</p><p>Stores in downtown Wilkes-Barre also got into the action in the week leading up to the Turkey Day games by advertising in the Times Leader and Evening News coats, sweaters, scarfs, wool socks, hats and gloves to stay warm.</p><p>For the city championship in 1951, GAR and Meyers battled it out at Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium in a game that started at 2 p.m.</p><p>For GAR, it was the last game for Coach Chet Wasilewski who was filling in as the Grenadiers leader as the head coach, Luther Richards, was activated with the 109th Field Artillery Battalion, the Evening News reported Nov. 22, 1951.</p><p>More than 7,660 fans attended the GAR-Meyers contest with GAR coming out on top 25-13m winning the city championship among the three Wilkes-Barre high schools.</p><p>At Plains Memorial Stadium in Plains Township, nearly 4,000 fans watched the gridiron game between Hanover and Plains.</p><p>&#8220;Hanover Hawkeyes coached by Leo Yozviak scored their first Turkey Day victory since 1947 by winning over Plains Memorial High School Red Raiders coached by Frank Czekalski 18-0 at Plains Athletic Field,&#8221; the Wilkes-Barre Record reported Nov. 23, 1951.</p><p>Perhaps the best game on Thanksgiving Day in 1951 was at Lincoln Field in Nanticoke where 5,000 fans watched the Plymouth Shawnee Indians and the Nanticoke Rams go scoreless through three quarters.</p><p>&#8220;In the final period, a Nanticoke back fumbled on his own 25, and Eddie Griffith, Shawnee back, scooped up the ball and raced to paydirt for the only score of the game,&#8221; the Evening News reported Nov. 23, 1951.</p><p>Other rivalry games in 1951 were Swoyersville defeating Luzerne 26-0, Pittston over St. John&#8217;s 2-0, Newport beat Berwick 20-7 and Avoca and Duryea ended in a 6-6 tie.</p><p>Westmoreland High School lost to the Dallas Township Redskins 20-19 before 1,500 fans at Kingston Township Field, Coughlin defeated its rival, Kingston, by a score of 14-6, Wyoming defeated West Wyoming 38-19, and Moosic shut out Dupont 32-0.</p><style>
