HAZLE TWP. &#8212; It was pretty sloppy.It was a little too choppy.But at the end of the first day, it was a win for Hazleton Area.Missing star point guard Brooke Boretski, the defending District 2 Class 6A champion Cougars stumbled through the first half of their girls basketball season opener Friday before Marissa Trivelpiece finished with a game-high 15 points to settle down Hazleton Area&#8217;s 51-36 victory over Williamsport in a first-round game of the Cougar Tip-Off Classic at Hazleton Area High School.&#8220;The team got off to a rough start &#8212; well, a couple of us got off to a rough start,&#8221; Trivelpiece said. &#8220;We&#8217;re without our point guard, Brooke. We just had to settle down and the nerves got out.&#8221;Without Boretski, who suffered a concussion two weeks ago in a scrimmage, the Cougars never really found a true offensive flow in a rematch of last season&#8217;s District 2 Class 6A subregional title game, in which Hazleton Area hung on for a 48-41 victory over Williamsport.But the Cougars did enough to build a 14-6 lead in the first quarter behind a couple inside baskets from Faith Grula and held steady with a seven-point halftime lead, thanks to four free throws by Trivelpiece.&#8220;It wasn&#8217;t bad, it wasn&#8217;t good,&#8221; Hazleton Area coach Joe Gavio said. &#8220;It wasn&#8217;t for lack of effort. But we missed a lot of easy peepers, that sets up our press.&#8221;The Cougars&#8217; full-court, man-to-man defense caused more than two dozen turnovers, but Hazleton Area couldn&#8217;t quite pull away until midway through the third quarter.&#8220;You get a steal, you&#8217;re looking for points,&#8221; said Gavio, whose Cougars missed 15 of their 27 free throws. &#8220;But they&#8217;re athletic, they blocked shots.&#8221;The Cougars finally unblocked things in the second half.Trivelpiece cut loose with three of 3-point field goals in the third quarter, Julia Mooney added five points in the period and Grula each scored four as the Cougars took control, 44-28, entering the final quarter.&#8220;It showed us we still have some things to work on,&#8221; Trivelpiece said, &#8220;and showed us how good of a team we could be when we&#8217;re at full strength. Everyone stepped up and did their job.&#8221;That allowed the host Cougars to step into the tourney championship at 7:30 p.m. Saturday against Lake-Lehman, which features 6-foot freshman Hailey Kline, 6-foot forward Claire Dougherty and 5-10 Chase Purdy and 5-8 guard Sarah Salus in its starting lineup.&#8220;We play (tonight) against a lot of size and a zone,&#8221; Gavio said. &#8220;Should be a good game.&#8221;Scranton Prep 49, Berwick 22The Bulldogs fell to defending District 2 Class 4A champion Scranton Prep in the season opener, after Berwick struggled to score in the first half.Berwick was limited to four points over the first two quarters and fell behind 34-4 at the break.Katie Starr led the Bulldogs with 11 of their 22 points.Northwest 53, Benton 28The Rangers won their season opener decisively over area rival Benton behind three players reaching double-figures.Reagan Harrison led the group with 19 points, 12 of them coming from beyond the arc. Tess Edwards and Charleigh Miner each added 10 points.North Schuylkill 71, Nanticoke Area 60The Trojanettes led by 10 at halftime, but failed to hold on against a North Schuylkill rally.Nanticoke Area made 11 3-pointers on the night, but it wasn&#8217;t enough to stop the Spartans.Riley Baird had 21 points to lead the Trojanettes. Lauren Casey added 14 points in defeat.BOYS BASKETBALLWilkes-Barre Area 68, Delaware Valley 44The Wilkes-Barre Area era of boys basketball officially began Friday night as the Wolfpack won the first game of the new program&#8217;s history with a 68-44 drubbing of Delaware Valley.Brandon Hall led Wilkes-Barre Area with a game-high 20 points. Blake Masker added 14 points while Cole Walker and Jordan Diggs posted 12 and 11 points respectively to round out the Wolfpack&#8217;s scorers who reached double-digits.Crestwood 71, Scranton 62The Comets held off Scranton&#8217;s fourth quarter comeback to win the season opener.Four Crestwood players reached double figures on the score sheet. Ryan Petrosky led the group with 21 points, followed by 15 from Paul Felsel, 14 from Marcus Vieney and 11 by Jacob Zaleski.East Stroudsburg 50, Tunkhannock 41Tunkhannock&#8217;s offense went cold in the fourth quarter, resulting in a come-from-behind win for East Stroudsburg.Tunkhannock held a four-point lead heading into the final quarter, but they scored only three points in the final frame to East Stroudsburg&#8217;s 16.Jack Chilson led the Tigers with 15 points. Ryan Harder was the other Tunkhannock player to reach double-digits with 10 points.Selinsgrove 48, Berwick 40The Bulldogs fell in their season opener to Selinsgrove, despite a strong second quarter.Blane Cleaver led Berwick with 19 points. He was the lone player on his team in double-figures.North Pocono 65, Nanticoke Area 60North Pocono was able to edge the Trojans in a back-and-forth game.Colby Butczynski stood out for Nanticoke Area despite the loss with 24 points. JJ Bielecki added 14 and Jake Krupinski had 11 points for Nanticoke Area.<ins>COLLEGES </ins><ins>MEN&#8217;S ICE HOCKEY </ins><ins>Wilkes 7, Manhattanville 5 </ins><ins>The Colonels stayed perfect in UCHC play with a win over Manhattanville, improving to 6-0 in conference play and 8-2 overall. </ins><ins>Wilkes had 10 different players register a point in the game, including Tyson Araujo, Tyler Barrow, Nick Godfrey and Taylor Bommarito. All picked up one goal an assist except for Godfrey, who scored two goals.
