STATE COLLEGE &#8211; Penn State held its annual football banquet on Sunday night, handing out traditional season-ending awards.The usual suspects walked away with the expected awards, without any surprises. But has the annual State College Quarterback banquet was drawing to a close there was one big surprise for Lake-Lehman graduate Nick Eury.Penn State coach James Franklin announced at the end of the banquet that Eury had been award a scholarship.The redshirt junior has served primarily as a scout team player for the Nittany Lions, typically running Penn State&#8217;s opponent&#8217;s offense each week during practices. But he has had some memorable moments on the Beaver Stadium field.The 5-foot-9, 212-pound running back picked up 44 yards on six carries in Penn State&#8217;s season-opening 79-7 victory over Idaho in August. He scored his first career touchdown in the game, running over several Idaho defenders on a short touchdown run and drawing praise from current and former teammates alike.Eury was also honored as the Scout Team Special Teams Player of the Year.Award winners on the night included:&#8226; Lions&#8217; Pride Outstanding Senior Player Award (greatest career contribution to Penn State Football) &#8211; cornerback John Reid, offensive lineman Steven Gonzalez, defensive tackle Robert Windsor&#8226; Most Valuable Player &#8211; wide receiver KJ Hamler&#8226; Most Valuable Offensive Player &#8211; tight end Pat Freiermuth&#8226; Most Valuable Defensive Player &#8211; linebacker Micah Parsons&#8226; Captain&#8217;s Award &#8211; punter Blake Gillikin, linebacker Jan Johnson, safety Garrett Taylor, linebacker Cam Brown, tight end Pat Freiermuth, safety Jonathan Sutherland, offensive lineman Michal Menet, quarterback Sean Clifford&#8226; Ridge Riley Award (senior for &#8220;sportsmanship, scholarship, leadership and friendship&#8221;) &#8211; safety Garrett Taylor, wide receiver Dan Chisena&#8226; Dick Maginnis Memorial Award (outstanding offensive lineman) &#8211; offensive lineman Michal Menet&#8226; Bob Mitinger Memorial Award (senior who exhibits courage, character and social responsibility) &#8211; linebacker Jan Johnson&#8226; Reid-Robinson Award (outstanding defensive lineman).
