Most of the first day of the X-Calibur Tournament at Wilkes University&#8217;s Marts Center went as planned with the host Wyoming Seminary advancing a wrestler to the semifinals in every weight class.But there were some upsets along the way on Friday highlighted by a pair of Wyoming Valley Conference wrestlers pulling them off.Wilkes-Barre Area&#8217;s Nino Cinti (132) and Pittston Area&#8217;s A.J. Gorto (160) reached the tourney semifinals as lower seeds in their respective brackets.Cinti, entering as the No. 6 seed, took down third-seeded Jaden Malendano from Princess Anne by fall in the quarterfinals to reach the semis. Gorto, seeded fifth in his bracket, knocked off the No. 4 seed Luke Wahlers from Pennridge 6-1 to stay in contention for gold. Wyoming Valley West&#8217;s J.J. White, the No. 2 seed at 126 also advanced to the semis to represent the WVC. Up next, Gorto will face the No. 1 seed in his bracket, while Cinti will take on the No. 2 seed at 132.For Wyoming Seminary, Daniel Sheen (106), Brennen Cernus (113), Gregor McNeil (120), Nic Bouzakis (126), Drew Munch (132), Beau Bartlett (138), Magnus Frable (145), Connor Kievman (152), Gabe Arnold (160), Andrew Donahue (170), Wolfgang Frable (170), Cole Rees (182), Kolby Franklin (220) and Nate Miller (285) all reached the semis, which begin at 9 a.m.The Blue Knights, who are ranked No. 1 in the country after winning the Ironman Tournament last weekend, lead the team race with 169.5 points and hold a 58-point lead over second-place Quakertown, which has just two semifinalists but 12 wrestlers in medal contention after the first day of action.Wilkes-Barre Area is the WVC team with the highest score, standing in 11th place with 57 points and three wrestlers still in the event. Pittston Area is next for the WVC squads with 45 points and two wrestlers still competing.
