<p>HARVEYS LAKE &#8212; A zoning variance to open up a state inspection garage was granted to area resident Bill Short at a Harveys Lake zoning board meeting Tuesday night &#8212; but not without a little bit of controversy.</p><p>It was more than your typical zoning meeting, as residents of the Harveys Lake area came out to voice their opinions about Short&#8217;s plans to turn his garage into a small business.</p><p>Some were there in support of Short&#8217;s endeavor, while others &#8212; like Sandra Serhan, who lives near Short&#8217;s property &#8212; were there to raise concerns about the possibility of bringing industry to a residential neighborhood.</p><p>Serhan raised a number of concerns to the zoning board, including noise issues, waste, scrap piling up, and the neighborhood&#8217;s status as a residential area.</p><p>&#8220;Imagine, a state inspection and auto repair shop next to residential properties,&#8221; Serhan said.</p><p>She also raised the flag that she wasn&#8217;t given proper notice that Short would be applying for the variance, only finding out through a neighbor that Tuesday&#8217;s meeting was even happening.</p><p>Short addressed these numerous concerns before the board and the crowd of residents.</p><p>&#8220;As far as scrap and waste (go), there won&#8217;t be any,&#8221; Short said.</p><p>The variance was granted to Short with a number of stipulations: That he only operate Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., that he use minimal signage, that he only allow two cars to be worked on at one time, that there be no body work or painting done at the garage, that the building can&#8217;t be enlarged in any way and that the variance is nontransferable.</p><p>In other words, if Short were to retire, the property would resort back to its original status, and anyone wishing to use the property for commercial use would have to appear before the board.</p><p>With all that, Short will get his inspection garage.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m a retired mechanic and I do work for the borough trucks and plow trucks anyway,&#8221; Short said. &#8220;Now, I&#8217;ll be able to do my work somewhere close.&#8221;</p><style>
