The movie &ldquo;1917&rdquo; may go down as one of the biggest Oscar winners that couldn&rsquo;t win big, and is already a mainstay in the debate about movies that mimic &ldquo;single shot&rdquo; cinematography. But it has done something else that should be discussed a lot more.
				By taking us through the muddy trenches, across the no man&rsquo;s land and into the dark bunkers and tunnels of battle-beaten France 103 years ago, &ldquo;1917&rdquo; did an effective job of shining a torch (&ldquo;flashlight&rdquo; to the Yankees from across the pond) on global conflagration that has been slipping rapidly out of our collective memories.
				Make no mistake, World War I should not be forgotten. It may not have become the &ldquo;war to end all wars&rdquo; that many hoped it would be at the time, but it offers invaluable lessons. It began with senseless nationalism that should have kept it local, yet quickly drew in nations both near and far, forging alliances and spreading the violence, made horrific by advancing military technology, yet drawn out by the evolution of trench warfare so grimly depicted in the film.
				As the movie drew crowds and Oscar predictions, this newspaper received an email from Bruce Miller pointing out an valuable resource in learning more: the free digital educational resources provided by the national WWI Museum and Memorial.
				&ldquo;Sadly,&rdquo; Miller wrote, &ldquo;more than 100 years after the official end of World War I, the history of the Great War continues to be glossed over in school curriculum across the nation. The National WWI Museum and Memorial &mdash; designated by Congress as the nation&rsquo;s official WWI Museum and Memorial in 2004 &mdash; is striving to expand the narrative about the war by providing teachers with free materials about the enduring impact of WWI on modern times.
				&ldquo;The museum&rsquo;s extensive resources, available to both educators and their students, can be easily accessed via a digital Education Database. The vast collection includes curriculum guidance and supporting materials, such as lesson plans, articles, videos, classwork documents and more.&rdquo;
				There are, of course, other resources on line for WWI information &mdash; <a href="http://history.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">history.com</a> also has a pretty expansive site on the topic. But the National Museum&rsquo;s website &mdash; <a href="https://www.theworldwar.org/learn/wwi" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">theworldwar.org</a> &mdash; is an impressive offering, including an interactive timeline, a section on women in WWI, and oral histories you can listen to from those who were actually involved (they were recorded between 1978-1980).
				The website has a distinct advantage over most other online options: It is part of a national museum, a physical place students, teachers and indeed anyone interested can explore in person if the internet offerings pique interest (they certainly should).
				World War II may have garnered the lion&rsquo;s share of attention for many reasons, not the least of which being that it happened more recently, and that &mdash; frankly &mdash; the technology had advanced so much by then that the fighting went truly global, and the visuals of tanks, bombers and aircraft carriers make for better visuals.
				But WWI has one thing no other war can ever have. It truly was the first World War. It took the lives of 16 million people, military and civilian. It had an improbable start and an imperfect ending that set up the rise of the Nazi regime. It offers many vital lessons.
				And the National WWI Museum and Memorial website stand ready to teach them.
