KINGSTON &mdash; In an unusually short virtual meeting lasting mere minutes, the Wyoming Valley West School board awarded a $1.6 million contract for roof replacement work at the middle school, appointed Dave Tosh as assistant to the superintendent, and learned that, like other local districts, online instruction rigor will be increased.
				The video streamed live online showed Superintendent Irve Deremer, the board secretary and two board members &mdash; including President Joe Mazur &mdash; sitting at the long line of tables typically set up on the stage of the Middle School Auditorium, though they were all spaced several seats apart and three wore face masks (DeRemer did not). All other members attended remotely.
				DeRemer opened the meeting by thanking staff and employees for helping work through the shifting landscape caused by the state-mandated school closings due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He also announced that beginning May 4 the remote-learning efforts will ramp up.
				Attendance will be tracked and teachers will &ldquo;introduce planned instruction,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Students will be responsible for participating in daily and weekly lessons and submitting work.&rdquo;
				Without discussion or even listing the items individually, the board voted &mdash; as it usually does &mdash; on three categories of motions: General recommended action, staff recommended action, and finance recommended actions.
				The first had the contract for roof replacement work, awarded to D.A. Nolt, Inc., and includes removal and replacement of the greenhouse.
				The second category included approval of additions to the substitute list, approval to pay teachers remaining compensation in one lump sum in the last pay scheduled for the fiscal year (which ends June 30), and accepting resignations of aide Stephanie Simon and boys basketball coach Rich Jones.
				An addendum to the staff recommendations included appointment of David Tosh as assistant to the superintendent.
