Citing the uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, Misericordia University has announced about 60 temporary furlough and about 20 permanent layoffs.
				Chief of Staff Jim Roberts issued the following statement:
				&ldquo;Yesterday, Misericordia University announced measures designed to protect the university&rsquo;s financial stability and sustain our resources to serve students during the COVID-19 crisis and beyond. The university will temporarily furlough approximately 60 employees effective April 27. The temporary furloughs will last through July and August at a minimum, depending on the position. It is planned that many furloughed positions will be reinstated unless the COVID-19 crisis further disrupts operations.
				Approximately 20 more positions will be permanently eliminated in addition to the furloughs.
				The COVID-19 crisis has severely impacted colleges and universities across the country, many of whom have taken similar steps to the actions Misericordia has taken. For our campus community, this pandemic has greatly disrupted the lives of our students, faculty, and staff, while increasing costs and decreasing revenue. Many organizations like Misericordia University have been forced to make the difficult decision to temporarily furlough valuable staff and eliminate some positions because the medium- and long-term financial consequences of COVID-19 crisis are not yet known. The situation is financially challenging as enrollment models and other financial trends become difficult to predict.
				Our classes and primary educational delivery services will continue uninterrupted as we fulfill our mission to provide a quality education to our students.
