WILKES-BARRE &mdash; A handful of employees received increased pay or benefits for about two weeks of work in Wilkes-Barre Area School District because they were required to come to the office despite the state-mandated closing of all schools, District Solicitor Ray Wendolowski explained Friday.
				During its first virtual board meeting Tuesday, the board voted without explanation to increase compensation for several salaried employees for their work from March 16 to March 27. Secretaries received an additional personal day for each day worked in that time, while others got time-and-a-half or double time.
				Wendolowski didn&rsquo;t have exact numbers but estimated there were fewer than a dozen employees involved. He said the board decided they should get some extra compensation because, unlike most district staff that could work at home, they had to come into the office, primarily to do payroll and other human services-related tasks. He did not know how much the move cost the district.
				But he did offer an estimate for another motion passed Tuesday that adjusted the contract with Student Transportation of America, Inc., one of the contractors for bus service. Wendolowski said the recently passes law usually known as Senate Bill 751 required districts to continue paying bus contractors but &ldquo;gave us the wiggle room&rdquo; to renegotiate the amount.
				The new terms, he said, are saving the district about $70,000 a month. The district is saving close to 100,000 a month when you factor in the lack of transportation for sporting events and fuel savings, he said.
