‘Long overdue’: White NHL players find their voice on racism

KINGSTON &mdash; The group of Black Lives Matter protesters in Kirby Park on Sunday afternoon may not have been as massive as some in recent weeks, but the message remained loud and clear: Something has to change.
				&ldquo;I am afraid that I won&rsquo;t get to have children, or that my children may not get to have theirs,&rdquo; said high school student Kaylee McNeil at Sunday&rsquo;s rally.
				While previous protests held in the area had been drawing hundreds to Public Square, Sunday&rsquo;s was a bit more low-key, with around 30 people making the trek from Public Square to Kirby Park.
				That didn&rsquo;t deter those who were there from being loud and proud, setting up shop with a microphone and a loudspeaker.
				In addition to the group of protesters that arrived as a unit, many individuals just enjoying a Sunday in the park stopped by to listen and lend their support to the Black Lives Matter movement.
				Music was a big theme in Sunday&rsquo;s rally. In addition to speeches and chants, there was dancing and some singing by a few featured guests.
				Courtney Haulcombe showed up to the park with her five children: Kiyshawn, Symphony, Lakiyah, Aniyah and Kiara. The five kids, with an assist from their mother, dazzled the crowd with their singing ability.
				&ldquo;They&rsquo;re all in our church choir, they&rsquo;ve got a lot of practice in,&rdquo; Haulcombe said of her kids. &ldquo;They&rsquo;re a blessing.&rdquo;
				Winter Jenkins also sang an original song for the crowd, and rose to the very high bar set by the five siblings. In a contrast to the more solemn tone of the singing, everyone was encouraged to join in on the Macarena and Cupid Shuffle as a way to celebrate life and each other.
				The list of speakers included Sharee Clark, who also spoke to the crowd at Public Square on Friday. She&rsquo;s also the godmother of Haulcombe&rsquo;s five children and was happy to see the turnout of young people at these protests.
				&ldquo;I see these rallies being driven by young people, and it&rsquo;s incredible,&rdquo; Clark said. &ldquo;Between Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Black Lives Matter movement, there&rsquo;s a gap &#8230; I&rsquo;m proud of these kids, and I felt like I had to be here to pass the baton.&rdquo;
				The youngest speaker was Natasha Guerrarosa, all of 9 years old.
				&ldquo;I hope that the struggle that you&rsquo;re all going through ends soon, and I love you,&rdquo; she said.
				Finally, United States Air Force veteran Faith Creed shared her own experiences with discrimination and police brutality.
				&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve been fighting this fight for 12 years,&rdquo; Creed said. &ldquo;People&rsquo;s skin color shouldn&rsquo;t matter. We&rsquo;re all human, we&rsquo;re all the same &#8230; there shouldn&rsquo;t be any hate.&rdquo;

Sunday protest in Kirby Park smaller than others, but just as loud
