WRIGHT TWP. &mdash; After an unusual procedural move and some heated debate about whether or not a tax increase is needed, Crestwood School District voted 5-4 on a final budget that increases property taxes 2.5%.
				There was a big problem, however.
				The live feed on the district&rsquo;s Facebook page cut out shortly before the vote, and Solicitor Jack Dean said he will recommend the board convene a special meeting by the June 30 deadline and vote again.
				Keeping true to a promise he made during a June 10 finance committee meeting, Board President James Costello moved the finance committee items to the end of the agenda, calling for votes on the other items first. The last item on the finance list was number 14, a vote on a final budget with no property tax increase. That&rsquo;s how the preliminary final budget was passed in May.
				But at the finance committee meeting last week, both Superintendent Bob Mehalick and Business Manager Peter Bard warned that, thanks to a balloon debt payment in 2021-22, the district might get through the upcoming year without a tax increase but would face a steep one the following year. They suggested the board consider two other options, a 2.5% increase and 3.2% increase, which would be the maximum allowed under state law.
				The vote on the no-increase budget lost 5-4. Again as promised, Costello suspended the board meeting and called a worksession, still open to the public, to discuss the other two options. The ensuing debate proved heated at times.
				Board member Maureen McGovern was particularly critical of a tax increase amid the job losses, price increases and tough economy caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, while other board members argued the district is running out of money and has little choice.
				The three-member finance committee voted 2-1 to recommend the 2.5% increase, which was immediately fashioned into an official agenda item number 15 and put onto a new printed agenda to be projected onto the screen for public viewing.
				But as Costello adjourned the worksession and announced he would resume the voting session, the Facebook feed froze, apparently for most viewers but without the board&rsquo;s knowledge. Contacted later, Solicitor Jack Dean said the board did vote on the new item and the 2.5% increase passed 5-4.
				Dean said he wasn&rsquo;t aware the feed had stopped until he started receiving calls asking what had happened. He checked the video posted on the Facebook page and saw it cut out before the budget vote was held.
				Dean said because it appears the vote was not available by public viewers &mdash; as required by law &mdash; he will recommend the special meeting for another vote on the final budget.
