Police: Driver of disabled vehicle spat at tow truck driver

A group from the Wyoming Valley traveled to Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y., to see Lake-Lehman grad and then-Duke University player Brian Kelly play for the U.S. U-23 men&rsquo;s soccer team against Chile in 1995.
				The U.S. won 2-1 in front of 4,866 fans. While Kelly didn&rsquo;t score, his long pass inside led to his team&rsquo;s first goal.
				&ldquo;It would have been nice to score in front of a hometown crowd like this,&rdquo; said Kelly, who started at left midfield and played the entire game. &ldquo;A lot of people took time out of their day to watch me. The win is more important than individual success.&rdquo;
				The three-time Wyoming Valley Conference MVP also spent about 20 minutes after the game signing autographs and posing for pictures. By the time he was done, other players were exiting the athletic center in street clothes.
				The game was one of the first for Kelly since returning from a broken leg suffered while playing for Duke.
				&ldquo;I&rsquo;m getting back in shape,&rdquo; Kelly said, &ldquo;but I&rsquo;m not quite there. I have to work on it. I still have a little ways to go before I can do 90 minutes.&rdquo;
				Players from the U-23 team were to make up the 1996 Olympic team. Kelly wasn&rsquo;t guaranteed a spot because new players were brought in throughout the process.
				Kelly didn&rsquo;t make the Olympic team and, perhaps, a coaching change hurt his chances. Timo Liekoski was fired two months later and replaced by former University of Virginia coach Bruce Arena. A third of the 18-man Olympic roster were players who played for Arena at Virginia.
				Kelly went on to play in the MLS and was selected in the first round &mdash; fifth overall &mdash; by the New York/New Jersey MetroStars in the 1997 college draft.

				Veteran tennis player Frank &ldquo;Buddy&rdquo; Goeltz, of Wilkes-Barre, was upset in the quarterfinals of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Tennis Singles Championships in Scranton by a 16-year-old high school player from Miami Beach, Fla.
				Dick McKee won easily 6-0, 6-2. Goeltz won the championship in 1931 and 1935 and was the runner-up in 1934.
				1968
				The Wa-Hoo Inn won the second-half title in the Valley Business Men&rsquo;s Bowling League by taking all four points from Medallion Shoe.
				Cliff Roberts paced the win with a 576 series. Dave Giberson led Medallion Shoe with a 545 series.
				The victory put Wa-Hoo Inn in position to play first-half champion P&R Clothing for the overall championship.
				1971
				John Petroski and Kenneth Orkwis each recorded a hole-in-one.
				Petroski got his ace on the 140-yard No. 6 hole at Happy Valley Country Club in Exeter. (It&rsquo;s now known as Four Seasons). He used a pitching wedge and was golfing with Mark Morris, Stephen Daroskewicz and Carl Calcara.
				Orkwis needed one swing to complete the 135-yard sixth hole at Lehman Golf Club. He was golfing with Charles Bednar and Ed Belasco.
				1994
				Berwick&rsquo;s Jimmy Spencer lived up to his nickname of Mr. Excitement as he won his first NASCAR Cup Series race. Spencer beat Ernie Irvan to the finish line to win the Pepsi 400 in Daytona.
				Spencer and Irvan pulled away from Dale Earnhardt and Mark Martin with seven laps left. Irvan held off Spencer until the final lap. He went up high to block Spencer, who darted low and pulled even.
				Spencer and Irvan bumped three times heading to the checkered flag. Spencer won by about three feet.
				Spencer was a little woozy and dehydrated and was helped to the media area for interviews. He won $75,880.
